About this deal

The reduced noise level is partly down to fan speed reduction, of course. Our anemometer reached 3.6m/s immediately in front of the fan (compared to other Honeywell scores of 4.4 and 5.1m/s) but measuring again two metres away, the difference was barely noticeable (0.7m/s against 0.8 and 1.2m/s). It does, however, have a slightly more limited angle of cooling than its stablemates, with a 60-degree spread of air movement, compared to the HO-5500RE’s 70 degrees. Conclusion The built-in remote control storage is also a nice space-saving feature. If you need to store or move the fan, it features a built-in carry handle, although we found it to be a bit bulky to be truly portable. Overall, we think this fan is more of a set-it-in-one-spot-and-enjoy option. Also, if the wood-paneled look isn't the right fit for your decor, this fan is also available in silver and grey. When it first arrived, we found it a bit fiddly having to screw the base onto the fan, but our criticism stopped there. The Dyson Pure Cool Tower Fan (TP04) is one of the best tower fans you can buy, period. It features Dyson’s innovative bladeless fan technology, making it safer for homes with children and pets. Plus, it combines turbocharger and jet engine science with the firm’s Air Multiplier tech to quietly but powerfully deliver 77 gallons per second of smooth, cooling airflow when you most need it. The Tower 184 has a good airflow rating of 505 CFM, average among tower fans. The fan is also relatively quiet, coming in at only 63 dB, though you can turn it down for less noise. It comes with a remote control and a sleep timer, both standard features in tower fans. The remote control attaches magnetically to the top of the unit when not in use so you don't lose it.The fan is easy to assemble out of the box; you only need to attach the base using four screws. The fan can be difficult to clean, but not more so than the average tower fan. It is a little more expensive than most tower fans, but the long warranty helps make it a better value for the money. Most tower fans will circulate air in a room which will have a cooling effect without actually lowering the air temperature.

Some fans, such as the Dyson Pure, will also remove allergens from the air. They're different from air conditioners — you don't have to close the door when the tower fan is on. How to clean a tower fan The quiet Night mode offers a similar volume to other Honeywell fans on their low settings, with a score of 68db. Unlike other Honeywell fans, night mode doesn’t alternate fan speeds, so light sleepers needn’t worry about changes in volume, either. An LCD display will allow you to get important information at a glance. It will show you the speed of the fan, as well as any functions that are active. While none of the tower fans accumulated an abundance of dust during testing, I also took note of how easy it would be to remove particles from the grille or fan blades, and whether any of the fans included special access for cleaning. The LG PuriCare AeroTower Air Purifying Fan is one mighty device. Similar to the Dreo Cruiser Pro T1, this sophisticated fan created a strong breeze during testing, so much so that I could easily feel it 15 feet away. And whereas the average tower fan offers three or four speeds, the AeroTower boasts 10, plus three different airflow settings: Direct, Diffusion and Wide. What really sets it apart, though, is its air-purifying capabilities. Equipped with a HEPA-grade filter, this smart device cleans the air that it circulates around the room. You can buy a tower fan from most home and garden retailers, supermarkets and DIY stores. But, you better get in early. These handy pieces of tech are hard to come by when the heatwave hits, so it's good to buy yours ahead of time. Try the following retailers:

The fan itself performed decently, but it was far from the most powerful fan we tested. Still, it will do a good job of circulating air in a small to medium-sized room. Holmes has good support options if you have problems or questions and the three-year warranty is one of the best we saw.The bladeless designs also tend to be quieter than pedestal fans which makes them useful if you're planning on having them turned on while you sleep. For cooling and circulating the air in large rooms, we recommend the Lask FH500 Fan and Space Heater Combo Tower. Tall enough to reach over a bed, it has a powerful airflow that we felt as much as 20 feet away while testing. And even at its highest setting, it functions as white noise and is not disruptive.

Firstly, it is important that the fan oscillates. Static tower fans won't cool as much air as they will focus on one spot. Fans that rotate will sweep the air, covering a greater area and cooling more of the room. A remote control will also make the tower much easier to control so that you can change settings or speed from the comfort of your couch. The best news is that the QuietSet name isn’t just marketing hype: the HY245E is noticeably quieter than most conventional tower fans, even at its higher settings, with a night mode you might actually sleep through. Other fans are bigger and put out more air over a wider space, but this one delivers more than enough cooling for the average living room during the day and works better in the bedroom at night. And if the price is a little higher, it’s well worth paying. Its powerful Air Multiplier technology (which only Dyson fans have) "amplifies" surrounding air, meaning that airflow is uninterrupted and smooth, rather than choppy, as it might be from other fans. And as a bonus, the fan uses 10% less energy than the AM02, the model it replaces and is 60% quieter. The type of fan you need really depends on three factors: room size, budget and personal preference. Having a clear plan about fan placement is a great way to decide on which type of fan you need.
