About this deal

We put both of these chips through a test suite of professional-class applications, like SPECworkstation and SPECviewperf, along with our standard application test suite. And yes, we put the chips through our gaming test suite to see how they fare. The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000 Series processors and Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7000 WX-Series processors offer a wide range of motherboard feature support tailored to meet the distinct needs of enthusiasts and professionals. Chipset The 5995WX was on par with the 5950X in Watch Dogs: Legion making it 15% faster than the 3990X, but much slower than the 12900K. We look forward to putting the Threadripper Pro 5995WX through its paces over the coming months and years, and we hope we can take a look at the 5975WX soon as we feel that model is better suited to our use case. Shopping Shortcuts: For this review we used the be quiet! Silent Loop 2 360mm AIO with the be quiet! STRX4 mounting kit. Like most AIO's the Silent Loop 2 isn't purpose built for the massive Threadripper CPUs, instead it was designed with LGA1200/1700 and AM4 processors in mind. So it doesn't exactly cover the entire heatspreader of a Threadripper processor, but it gets most of it.

All of the Threadripper Pro 5000 series processors have TDPs of up to 280 watts. They also feature support for 8 memory channels – versus 4 channels on standard Threadrippers -- and have 128 integrated PCIe 4.0 lanes. L3 cache maxes out at 256MB on the top-end 5995WX, but drops down to the 128MB on the 5975WX and the Threadripper Pro 5965WX we’ll be showing you here.

CPU Test Suite Average Results for AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5965WX

AMD Radeon™ PRO workstation graphics are designed to provide professionals, creators and artists with exceptional performance, reliability, and value to drive the most demanding professional design and creative applications across a range of industries, including Media & Entertainment, Design & Manufacturing, and Architecture, Engineering & Construction. For comparison we've included the Threadripper 3990X which was tested on the MSI Creator TRX40 motherboard using the same Team T-ForceDDR4-3600 memory at 3400. Then we have a few desktop CPUs for comparison: a Ryzen 9 5950X tested with dual-rank DDR4-3200 memory, and the Intel Core i9-12900K using DDR5-6400 memory. The graphics card used for all testing is the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti. Let's get into the data... Benchmarks All three models support 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes, 2TB of DDR4-3200 octa-channel memory and a TDP of 280 watts. This means AMD has officially killed off the HEDT version of Threadripper and replaced it with the workstation version called Threadripper Pro. So what's changed and why have they done this? The latest additions to the product family are the AMD Radeon PRO W7000 Series workstation graphics cards built on the groundbreaking AMD RDNA™ 3 architecture. Designed to deliver higher performance than the previous generation, the Radeon PRO W7000 Series graphics enable professionals to meet high-pressure deadlines under increasingly tight budgets while delivering world-class results.

The Threadripper 3000 series had no issues with 4K60 footage from the older GH5, but when we upgraded to the GH6 we wanted to start working with 5.7K60, and this proved troublesome. Of course, we could use proxies but they are a pain for editing, taking a lot more time, and overall just a more cumbersome method than we prefer. Threadripper Pro has 128 PCIe 4.0 lanes (the CPU exposes 120 lanes to the user) compared to Intel's 64 lanes, an advantage because most workstations have plenty of additives, like GPU accelerators, NVMe storage, and high-speed NICs. Threadripper Pro chips come with the 'WX' suffix to denote they are designed for the workstation market. AMD didn't introduce more cores with the two top-end models, but they're faster due to the step up from the Zen 2 architecture to Zen 3. Workstations from MNCs including Dell Technologies, HP, and Lenovo, as well as System Integrators using the new AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7000 WX-Series processors are expected to be available by the end of 2023. High-end desktop platforms using AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000 Series processors will be available from System Integrators by the end of 2023. Finally, the new AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000 Series and select Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7000 WX-Series processors will be available from DIY retailers starting on November 21 st.The last application benchmark is Blender Open Data and we'll also look at power usage in this test soon. Once again when it comes to rendering benchmarks the 5995WX is generally only a little faster than the older 3990X, here we're looking at 7% more performance, so nothing to write home about. System Power Consumption If you're familiar with the Threadripper 3000 processors, then this new 5000 series won't offer any surprises, it's basically the same deal. The layout is much the same and the power consumption is much the same, therefore the cooling requirements are about equal. We're also looking at comparable performance between the 5995WX and 5950X in Horizon Zero Dawn, meaning the new 64-core processor is 17% faster than its predecessor. Cooling Another rendering benchmark is V-Ray and here the 5995WX was 15% faster than the 3990X, so not a huge performance gain, but about what we've come to expect for this sort of workload. For code compilation work the 5995WX doesn't appear all that much faster than the 3990X which makes sense as the 5950X was only slightly faster than the 3950X. So for this sort of workload the more expensive Zen 3-based Threadripper processors probably aren't worth the premium.

AMD's original Threadripper chips(and supporting motherboards) were geared for HEDT, meaning they came with higher core counts and access to more memory and PCIe connectivity than mainstream desktop PC chips. However, pricing was still mostly within reach for enthusiasts. After several generations, AMD released its Threadripper Promodels with twice the number of memory channels (eight) for professional users and unique motherboards, but the beefy chips carried the eye-watering pricing to match their incredible performance. Introduces new Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7000 WX-Series processors, the ultimate workstation platform from OEMs including Dell Technologies, HP, and Lenovo –Time for a few gaming benchmarks, just because you might also want to game on your workstation, rather than use an entirely separate system for that. The 5995WX is impressive in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, delivering slightly more performance than the 5950X and we have seen this in the past. The 3990X was faster than the 3950X, for example. As we mentioned before, Steve and Tim's video editing workstations are currently using the Threadripper 3970X and 3990X and while both have been game changing, allowing us to stabilize dozens upon dozens of b-roll clips at once while also providing impressive encoding performance, the recent upgrade to a Panasonic GH6 mirrorless camera has caused a few editing related headaches. Both AMD and NVIDIA offer compelling graphics options for Threadripper and Threadripper PRO-powered workstations.

AMD's work continues, and the company highlighted a 2.3X improvement in the ANSYS mechanical simulation software after code tuning and a 200X improvement in the Autodesk Arnold rendering software. These projects continue with other software providers, which isn't surprising given AMD's continuing market share gains in the workstation market. According to Geekbench 5, the average single-and multi-core scores for the Ryzen Threadripper 3970X are 1,285 points and 22,366 points, respectively. We saw a similar single-core margin as with the Pro variant. In this case, however, the Ryzen Threadripper Pro 5975WX delivered up to 23.4% higher multi-core performance. The Threadripper Pro 5995WX is an impressive processor and although for the majority of our testing it wasn't a great deal faster than the 3990X, it can be around 30% faster depending on the workload. However even that percentage gain can be fairly meaningless in a workstation setting, so here's what happened in ours... The single core gains are more impressive, here the 5995WX was 14% faster than the 3990X, but also 9% slower than the 5950X and almost 30% slower than the 12900K. For multithreaded workloads, Threadripper PRO processors offer up to 96 cores and 192 threads, the most cores of any workstation processor for complex simulation, generative design, rendering, and software compilation tasks, where users can see up to two times faster performance in tools like Chaos V-Ray. 3 Additionally, Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7000 WX-Series processors offer up to 384MB of L3 cache along with eight channels for DDR5 memory for applications which require high memory capacity and bandwidth.And all of this isn't to mention the sheer computational heft afforded by beefy core counts and generous slabs of L3 cache. With access to plenty of memory and storage throughput, we expect that AMD will carve out substantial wins in many categories, especially relative to Intel's Xeon W series that already struggles against the previous-gen Threadripper lineup. Except for the quad-channel Ryzen Threadripper 3000 chips, all of the above AMD and Intel processors support eight channels of DDR4-3200 ECC memory. Threadripper Pro supports a maximum of 2TB of memory in UDIMM, RDIMM, and LRDIMM flavors, while Xeon W-3300 supports up to 4TB. That's not to mention that AMD's core/thread counts weigh in at 64/128 compared to Intel's 38/76.
