For best performance, the PS5 does need a stand, whether it be the standard one by Sony, or an after-market one. Is it better to have your PS5 vertical or horizontal? One of the biggest decisions you’ll make once you get your PS5 is whether you’d want it standing or if you want it to sit more securely horizontally. While the PS5 is secure laying down on its own, it’s still better to get a horizontal stand to keep it from getting damaged. With that, we’d like to introduce the NexiGo PS5 Horizontal Stand. The NexiGo Cooling Stand has different cooling settings to help you find optimal performance. It also has a downward design that lets the heat out through the bottom of the cooler. It has multiple functions, such as charging two DualSense controllers on each. A full charge from an empty will happen in about three hours. Interestingly enough, before the launch of the PlayStation 5, there were rumors that Sony had an issue cooling the console. While this was never proven and Sony doesn't respond to rumors, the results of the recent testing are alarming. Take the stand and place it on the bottom side of the PlayStation 5, lining up the hole in the stand with the screw hole in the bottom of the console. This stand is more about organizing your accessories. For one, it has a headphone stand and space to keep the DualSense controllers. What’s more, the sides have wedges to hold game CDs. Now, that’s a plus. The cooling fans come with three levels and can ramp up to 4500 RPM. Needless to say, you may find the fan noise a bit irritating when you’re playing games. As such, we recommend you keep the fan speeds at medium or low levels for the most optimal gaming experience. The stand can charge up to two PS5 controllers in 3-3.5 hours and is powered by the USB-C output from the PS5.
NexiGo is a PS5 accessory manufacturer we’ve already reviewed. Not too long ago, we looked at their PS5 controller station, and we were pleased with its performance. The NexiGo PS5 Upgraded Vertical Stand offers many of the same features as the Benazcap stand. For one thing, it stores your headset and games as well as your controllers. For another thing, it also supports an external USB power supply for charging while your PS5 is off. There are a couple of minor differences. Instead of a media remote slot, for instance, the row of game slots is extended to 17. All-in-all, a great stand, and fantastic value for money, something that’s often missing from after-market PS5 accessories. The fans themselves draw a reasonable amount of air, and seem to do a good job of cooling your console. Just as importantly, they run quietly. You don’t have to worry about a ton of fan noise, even during quiet moments in a game or a movie. On the top front of the housing, you’ll see a row of LED lights. These indicate the status of the controller chargers, as well as the fan. The power LED functions as a soft touch button for turning the fan on and off.
There’s a lot to love about the OIVO PS5 Cooling Stand. It’s an all-in-one cooling stand that features everything that you need for your PS5. Price-wise, the OIVO PS5 Cooling Stand is the most expensive stand you can get right now, but that price is well worth it, considering what it brings to the table. The Benazcap PS5 Cooling Station is a much beefier stand with storage for all your gear. In addition to your controllers, you can also stow your headset, media remote, and up to 15 games. The quiet fan is much appreciated, as is the option to supply external power. We highly recommend this stand. So, where does this leave us? The Kootek PS5 Vertical Stand is effective and affordable. However, its charging function won’t work when your console is in standby. It also has fairly loud fans, so you’ll probably want one of the other choices unless price is an issue.

Easy to mount, the NexiGo PS5 stand features a rigid build quality and is built to last. Unfortunately, it doesn’t come with features such as USB hubs or exhaust fans. However, since the design of the stand lifts the console a bit, it tends to efficiently dissipate the heat well anyway. Unfortunately, it doesn’t save a user’s RGB preferences. To that end, if you turn off RGB lighting and use the PS5 the next day, the stand automatically enables RGB lighting again. It’s a minor inconvenience but something to take note of nonetheless. Organize Your PS5 Like a Pro The dual fans keep the console cool, and the metal base assists in pulling heat away from the game console. LED status lights indicate the charge of the controllers, and there’s even a built-in stand for a headset and a cable hook to help keep things more organized. Beside the game storage is a slot for a PS5 media remote, if you have one. Seriously, it looks way better when it’s vertical. Also, remember that discs should be inserted with the printed side facing to the left.
There are also 3 USB ports on the front of the stand of as well which can readily support additional DualSense controllers and a headphone. Again, the nifty design of the Kiwihome PS5 vertical stand makes it compatible with both the Disc and Digital version of the PlayStation 5.Last but not least, we have the stand from NexiGo. This one is popular for its quiet fans, even though it bundles dual fans. The former ensures that you are not distracted while you are gaming. At the same time, the stand is easy to put together and works as advertised. Since then, the problems have seemed to calm down a bit – but if you’re a hardcore gamer that spends most of your time playing, then you’ll want to do anything you can to extend the lifespan of the system. While there isn’t necessarily a right or wrong way to orient the console, we can say that the PS5 is vertical in almost all of Sony’s marketing materials, which might imply that that’s the way the company intends for people to use it. We can also independently verify that it looks way better when it’s standing vertically. On the front panel, there’s a row of three USB ports. The two on the left and right are standard USB Type-A ports for charging external devices. The middle Type-C port, however, serves a different purpose. It’s actually an input port, which can be plugged into an AC adapter. When connected in this fashion, it doesn’t matter whether your PS5 is in standby mode. Your controllers and other devices will still continue to charge.
The only thing you can really do is run your console under the most extreme conditions possible. Let’s say you have no air conditioning. Wait until a 90-degree day, fire up your console, and play your favorite shooter for a few hours. The more graphically demanding the game, the better. If your PS5 hasn’t shut itself down yet, you aren’t likely to face any cooling issues. If it does shut down, or if the housing is too hot to touch, a cooling fan would be a wise investment. How this plays out over time is anyone's guess. For now, I haven't heard of any PlayStation 5's having issues due to overheating issues. But we're still early into the console's life, and these heating concerns could become an issue later down the road. The memory running warm is concerning and is a sign that Sony does have some work to do regarding cooling the console. I'm sure that updated versions of the PS5 will feature some sort of revision that changes this.
