About this deal

A few forward-thinking groups of Aeldari managed to avoid the Fall, building vast spaceships called Craftworlds and escaping their increasingly debased kin. Known as the Asuryani, these refugees have lived a precarious existence in the millennia since the coming of Slaanesh, preserving a more austere way of life and guarding against another calamity. These are Guardians on bikes. Doesn´t sound exciting but it is. There are several possible builds. I´ll go into the two most competitive here. Brushes: at least three—a small layer brush, a medium layer brush, and a medium basecoat brush. Stay away from bargain brands. They’ll only betray you.

Kurnous’ Bow : A bad relic shuriken pistol that’s D2 and does AP-3 on 4+ rather than 6. Still a horrendous choice. D Now, with Alaitoc, they come with a natural -2 to hit in most cases. That means Space Marines become Orks when shooting at them and Custodes become Guardsmen. It´s a -33.33% chance to hit them. Alaitoc rangers can use a Stratagem that makes the enemy only hit on 6´s. Safe to say, your opponent will only shoot at them if he has to. Which you are going to make him by planting these sneaky fellas onto objectives, preferably in cover. Starhawk Missile (1CP): An INFANTRY model with a Missile Launcher gets +1 to hit against a FLY target and does d3 MWs instead of normal damage. Once upon a time this could be relevant on Dark Reaper Exarchs, but now they have access to Rapid Shot (which doesn’t combo with this) they’ll pretty much always want to do that. D Why play them: They’re random and hilarious. Set your units in the direction of the opposition, and then charge them directly in. Laugh maniacally when an Ork slaughters a Space Marine Terminator at one eighth the points cost.

Wych Cult Obsessions

Shard of Anaris : Eldar have no less than three relic power swords, all of which look a bit silly next to modern relic weapons, but this is definitely the least bad. It gets damage d3 and re-rolls wounds all the time, so while it won’t let your Wing Autarch do much to a tank, it does actually let him meaningfully engage with enemy characters or elite infantry. C+ Yriel : If you ever want to take a Foot Autarch in an Iyanden list you should probably take him instead. However, you very rarely want to do either of these things. Now, what is a detachment? A detachment is basically a force organization. Detachments force you to fill out certain roles - for example, the most common is the "Battalion Detachment". For it you need to play at least 2 HQ´s and at least 3 Troops. It benefits you 5 Command Points (CP) which can be used further to buy you access to special rules, Relics or be used in game. Every army usually fields at least one Battalion as there is no more points efficient ration of CP/Points spent. Command Points are a very valuable resource and one should keep the cost of Stratagems in mind when building an army - if you are planning to use a 3 CP strat every Turn you need to have the points in place. Howling Banshees, in particular, will benefit greatly from the chance to inflict additional Damage in this manner, as the -3 AP of their power swords means that they’ll likely cut straight through their target’s armour. All of a sudden, that solid line of 2-Wound Primaris Space Marines doesn’t look so intimidating!

Phantasm almost needs an article all of its own (and indeed we talked a bit about it in our deployment tactica). For 2CP, at the start of the first Battle Round (i.e. after you know who’s going first) you can redeploy up to three units. They have to stay on the board (i.e. you can’t move something “into” Webway Strike) but you can move a Transport with everything inside. Children of Khaine: Aspect warriors do +1D in melee on an unmodified 6 to wound. Cool on paper, but the only worthwhile melee aspect is Shining Spears, who don’t need the help. D The first of all Phoenix Lords, Asurmen was the founder of the Dire Avengers Aspect Path, one of the most numerous Aspects of all. He is an exemplar of precision on the battlefield, devastating enemies with his elegant approach to warfare. The Eldar don’t just lay claim to ground warfare, through the Swooping Hawk Aspect they master aerial combat as well. Phoenix Lord Baharroth is terror-from- the-sky incarnate, descending to deal swift justice without mercy or hesitation. So, in conclusion - if you are interested in playing a Wraithheavy army this set is the way to go and an absolute steal. Bar the Walker, every unit in it is useable and, with a few tweaks, becomes good. The Walker is a bit of a bummer - but you are basically getting him and the Farseer for free. At the end of the day, it´s 60 points. Those won´t win or lose you a game. So this concludes the look into the different sets. If this post is wanted, I´ll keep updating it over the next days - what are some key psychic powers, what are the different Craftworlds like, which stratagems to look out for, how to add to the different start sets. And, once we know more, go into Ynnari. The upshot of this is that unless you’re planning on either Charging or performing an Action you can pretty much be advancing with a lot of your units all the time, significantly increasing your mobility around the board. Craftworld Attributes Now, the Craftworlds Eldar fly through space, seeking survival in a hostile universe, and fighting death with every fibre of their being. Their Craftworlds – entire nations bound in semi-organic matter, powered by psychic energy from their Infinity Circuits – are the last vestige of this once great power. Aeldari society has completely changed, focused now on control and discipline, as they refuse to fall to the same terrors which blighted the Eldar of the past. So from a pure monetary perspective this set is probable a B. You are saving close to 40% when buying this set. Which sounds great, but other sets have even better margins. So let´s take a look at the units inside.

Diviners of Fate: All models have a 6++. Currently, defensively, this is inferior to Alaitoc and inferior to Ulthwe against D1 weaponry on infantry. However, you get to take this and another, so it could be worth a look if you really want one of the others and don’t have any particular needs. C

Craftworld Attributes

Students of Vaul: Vehicles regain a wound at the start of each of your turns. Extremely marginal and it’s a crime that it doesn’t work for Wraith Constructs. C Overview: What if Legolas, but in space? That’s the Aeldari, also known as Eldar and Asuryani. They’re elegant and immortal, and they have the most advanced technology in the 41st millennium. The Aeldari also enjoy a gamut of nasty psychic powers, which are 40K’s version of spells. Despite their superiority in firepower and speed, the average Aeldari unit is fragile. If it had ended there, no one could doubt the Eldar had paid a fitting price for their vile empire, but Slaanesh’s curse went even further. Firstly, the majority of the Aeldari Gods were brutally slain, leaving only a few to escape into the hidden places of the universe. The second, and most damning, impact caused by Slaanesh’s creation involves death itself. Without Gods to shepherd their souls the Eldar swiftly found that after death they were consumed by this nascent dark God. Superior Shurikens: +4″ range on Shuriken weapons. Lets Dire Avengers in particular reach surprisingly far with their guns, and on 9th’s small board gives lets you operate very effectively. B Stratagem – Pathfinders 1CP: A Rangers unit in cover can only be hit on an unmodified 6 for the rest of the phase.

Where they differ is in the costs and the rest of their stats. The foot Autarch has plasma grenades and a star glaive to use with his 4A (-1 to hit, Sx2, AP-3, d3 damage) and weighs in at 80pts. Being cheap is his main attraction, and he can be a good choice to slot into a gunline army (and is another good user of Faolchu’s Wing). If I´m going with my initial rating system - which, again, is completely subjective and only based on my own opinion and game results - he´s a straight (A+). For 135 points, he is ridiculous. He is the bane of Elite Infantry with Smite + Executioner and offers just so much more than a regular Farseer for a measly 25 points. If you play Ulthwé, play Eldrad. With safety and the vast resources of the Eldar Empire, the Aeldari became insular. They ceased looking outwards for new inspiration, preferring to explore their desires and hedonistic impulses. The Eldar Empire became darker; twisted needs and terrible acts becoming commonplace as they slaked their lusts on each other and the many lesser races that populated the galaxy. Then there’s the Crusade section, which is a cool way to grow and develop your army as you play games, as units earn experience and gain new skills and armaments. Tell epic stories of conflict and triumph as you blood a force of fresh troops and mould them into hardened veterans armed with legendary relics of war. Children of Morag Hei: Get +1 to hit rolls if half the models in your unit have been destroyed. Way too hard to set up for a pretty mild payoff. D

Masterful Shots: Ignore Light and Heavy cover. Deceptively powerful, and a common partner to Expert Crafters. B+ Suggested starting kits: Start Collecting! Astra Miliatrum, Cadian Defence Force, Basilisk, Manticore Now that we’ve got through all the pre-amble of covering units and special abilities, we’re ready to go through the units in the Eldar army. As with pretty much all earlier codexes, the units are a distinctly mixed bag, and we’re not going to dwell for too long on the ones that don’t quite get there. HQ Farseer Overview: Every human-colonized planet has to provide soldiers to the Astra Militarum (also known as the Imperial Guard). There are so many recruits, they’re considered more expendable than ammunition. Tanks, artillery, rows of conscripts, hardened veterans, and sheer power through the weight of numbers: this is the Astra Militarum’s mantra. Terrain and scenery: Technically optional, if you’re okay with fighting skirmishes on bland, flat, barren landscapes. Adding barricades, trees, ruins, and other items is the best way to avoid that. There are plenty of companies that sell pre-made kits, including Games Workshop, Gamemat.eu, The War Store, and Secret Weapon Miniatures.
