About this deal

What is a "non-shadow RD", you ask? Well, all 10-speed Di2 derailleurs and the first generation 11-speed Di2 road derailleurs:

We expected it to be at least partly wireless, and it is. We were sure it would be 12-speed, and it is. Smith has also been investigating the effectiveness of chain lubricants. There, the results vary tremendously. In fact, Smith says one popular lubricant actually increases drivetrain frictional losses by five watts relative to the factory treatment. Some of the power savings Friction Facts has uncovered may not equate to big money in the consumer realm, but even a consistent one-watt gain could be the difference between winning and losing at the top end of the sport. Smith admits that some top team representatives have already approached him.

While many riders will still prefer to keep things fully manual, the overall improvements to the shift make these options much more appealing – I’ve found I quite like the semi-synchro mode for general riding. During our work on the lube development we have learned that initial application of any liquid lubricant has a profound impact on the chain performance and friction. It also depends on how well you strip the chain from the factory anti-rust substance. For this reason, we have developed our special multi-stage vacuum process for the ProTour teams to squeeze extra precious watts on top of the best performing lube. This is what differentiates us from everyone else. Instead, 7900 can only downshift two gears per sweep instead of three and although Shimano claim a 20 percent reduction in shift lever throw, our tape measures and protractors suggested otherwise. Upshifts still require a lengthy 20-degree arc (or 40mm of linear throw, 30mm of which is nothing but slop) and single downshifts an even longer 27 degrees or so.You’re almost there, but there’s one more thing to keep in mind. Some chains are directional. They’ll either have an arrow ‘ printed’ on them, or something that indicates the inside or outside of the chain. Shimano has provided claimed weights for every component in the disc groupset, along with a comparison to an equivalent R9170 Di2 groupset. It doesn’t look like much has changed on the rim brake side. There’s still a choice of standard single-bolt calipers or direct-mount versions. In normal riding, the shifting seems to be impossible to fluster. You can crash through gears if you’re an absolute savage about dumping multiple gears at very low cadence, but by and large, the groupset lives up to its claimed ability to shift under hard pedalling loads. With development of the new groupset focused primarily on road disc brakes, the rim brake R9250 levers are not wireless.

Perhaps the most visually arresting part of the new groupset, the ST-R9270 hydraulic lever bodies are slightly larger than those of R9100, and the lever bodies curve inwards slightly. The reality is that there’s no demand for mechanical from the pros who race on Dura-Ace, and it’s certainly waning on the consumer side too. Though the crank arms are dramatically different from a finish standpoint from 7800, their overall construction and attachment method are similar so there is little difference in arm stiffness. That’s hardly a bad thing considering 7800’s benchmark status, and the fact that 7900 continues to be competitive weight-wise with carbon – and in some cases, even better – is testament to Shimano’s superior forging capabilities. While the numbers are familiar, Shimano has tweaked the ratios in the middle of the cassette, offering smaller jumps in the most-used gears. The ratios are as follows:

Ultegra RD-R8150 (12-speed), RD-R8050-GS (medium cage), RD-R8050-SS (short cage), RD-RX805 (clutch) The Di2 shift buttons are more offset than previously and are designed to be easier to differentiate from one another when you’re wearing gloves. There’s still a ‘hidden’, user-assignable button on top of each lever hood. Basically, if the point where the two chain ends meet is the ‘end’ of an outer link, add three links (left image). Shifting is said to be smoother, too. R9200 cassettes use ‘Hyperglide+’, a design debuted with Shimano’s top-spec mountain bike groupset, XTR M9100. Price Matches may only be honored on identical items. The product must be the same make and model (i.e., the same size, color, year, etc.).As you can see, some components have lost weight, others have gained a little, and in total the new groupset is claimed to be 35g heavier than its predecessor. Have the two chain ends meet at the large chainring, and then add four or five links, depending on the zero point shown in Shimano’s image below: It would be a surprise if Dura-Ace was anything less than brilliant, and first impressions of R9200 are overwhelmingly positive. Wireless communication takes place between the levers and the rear derailleur, with the latter always ‘on’ and listening for signals. The main battery is claimed to last for around 1,000km of riding, while the coin cells in the levers should manage 1.5 to 2 years.
