About this deal

Aromatic plants with a Mediterranean provenance often have deep-root systems that seek out food and water from the depths, so silvers are often best left to their own devices. British wildflowers also prefer low-nutrient soils, so concentrate fertilisers in certain areas and feed in the growing season - including September. Q4 Pelleted Fertiliser should be applied to the growing media before sowing and planting flowers and vegetables. It can then be used as a top dressing once or twice during the summer months to encourage crops. This product must be stored out of the reach of pets and children and away from pesticides, food, drink and animal feed. One large 10kg tub can fertiliser up to 40 square metres of land, so if you have plenty of land, you may need to buy more.

Originally developed for the commercial grower, Q4 Fertiliser is the trusted choice for producing bigger, brighter blooms and bumper crops. Tomatoes: 200g per sq.m (Before planting in the soil). Spread 35g per sq.m as a regular feed at 3-4 week intervals. Shop bough fertilisers contain an N-P-K formula consisting of N for nitrogen, P for phosphorous and K for potash. A good fertiliser will also contain trace elements essential for plant growth. If you have a preponderance of grass clippings lay them on a sheet for 24 hours in a sunny place and either add them to your heap (once brown) or mulch raspberries etc. Comfrey tea A balanced slow-release fertiliser will often have equal amounts of each and this mixture will feed a plant for several months without producing a noticeable surge of growth. Choosing your fertilisersFor best results apply evenly to soil, preferably when it is wet. Q4 Fertiliser is perfect for roses either prior to planting out or for established bushes when it can be applied as a top dressing in the spring. Vitax Q4 Multi-Purpose Compost is based on the finest Irish Moss Peat obtained from our own peat mire in County Kildare, Ireland. All peat used in this compost is obtained from within the existing boundaries which have been worked for many years. Virgin areas of the mire are not exploited. Different fertilisers contain different ratios of the three major ingredients recorded as a series of a numbers. 5-10-5 is twice as rich in phosphorous as it in nitrogen and potassium, 7-7-7 is an equal mixture of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium, and 4-7-6 refers to 4 of nitrogen, 7 of phosphorous and 6 of potash. As a gardener, you get to the point where you have tried many things and you still are not getting the results. You look to what commercial growers and professional gardeners use in growing their crops and plants and in trying to replicate the results you often see on the TV. With 7 trace elements, it’s recommended for bedding plants, houseplants, chrysanthemums, roses, container plants, salad vegetables, dahlias, soft fruit, ericaceous plants, vegetables, sweetcorn and hanging baskets. Growmore (7-7-7)

The ideal situation is to have the best of both worlds: an organic-based fertiliser with enhanced nutrient content which includes all of those plant nutrients that are required in smaller amounts, but are nonetheless essential for plant growth and performance. I should also mention that ericaceous plants such as rhododendrons and camellias need specific fertilisers; they are fussy feeders and cannot cope with the high nutrient levels of general fertilisers. What I usually do is broadcast growmore in the latter half of March or early April, turning it in lightly to provide a readily available 'fix' for the plants, then apply composted materials as a mulch over the top - no need to dig it in (though you can if you prefer) it gets taken down into the soil anyway over time, to take care of longer term plant and soil health. If you're a follower of 'no dig' gardening, then broadcast the growmore and apply a mulch over the top, without digging the soil, provided there's no weed/moss growth present.Q4 All Purpose Plant Food should be applied to the growing area before the sowing of planting flowers and vegetables takes place. In the summer months it can be used as a top dressing but no more than two applications. This will translate to a nitrogen: phosphorous: potassium (NPK) ratio of 5.3:3.3:8.3. This can be seen as a high potassium fertiliser and therefore suitable for flowering and fruiting plants. To be truthful as said earlier, the amount of phosphorous is a bit low but this can be supplement by adding superphosphates in the mix or by using liquid fertilisers.

One thing it cannot replace is phosphorous that is required for root growth. The problem is that this general purpose fertiliser does not have enough phosphorus in the form of phosphate to aid these plants. It will help but you need more to grow your carrots and parsnips. Keep the products to the bare minimum. You do not need a separate fertiliser for every vegetable, for instance.

Environmental Responsibility

As well as this product being effective to use on flowers and vegetables, it is also ideal to use on fruit, tomatoes and chrysanthemums. The confusion in this thread seems to be caused by conflating two things - feeding plants and 'feeding' soil. Chemical fertilizers such as Growmore or Vitax feed plants directly but do little for the soil. Soil health is important, and that is improved by adding composted materials such as animal manures, good garden compost, leafmould, any humus rich material basically, which will naturally increase bio diversity; that bio diversity will naturally provide more trace elements and more nutrients to your plants, but over time rather than in a week or three. Q4 Pelleted Fertiliser: Apply throughout the growing season Contains vital plant foods and trace elements essential for abundant growth of flowers and crops An easy to handle, low dust, pelleted fertiliser. For best results apply evenly to soil, preferably when it is wet. Q4 Fertiliser is perfect for roses either prior to planting out or for established bushes when it can be applied as a top dressing in the spring. It will ensure that the plants are healthier, the leaves and shoots are greener, the flowers vibrant and the fruits abundant.
