Miyake, A., M. J. Emerson, F. Padiall, and J.-C. Ahn. 2004. Inner speech as a retrieval aid for task goals: the effects of cue type and articulatory suppression in the random task cue paradigm. Acta Psychologica 115: 123–142. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.actpsy.2003.12.004. Once, we were “darkened in [our] understanding” (Ephesians 4:18). We may have been smart, even brilliant, but we shut the doors and windows of our minds against the knowledge of God. We preferred illusions over truth (Romans 1:18). We crafted alternative realities where God was not glorious, Christ not worthy, sin not damnable, and holiness not desirable. Our minds, created to be like a garden of the Lord, became a field of thorns, a scorched land.

Well as an online term yes, but as a form of OCD, not really, it’s merely a phrase. It’s certainly not a medically listed term, and we will try and explain why we don’t consider it a separate form of OCD. Like any person suffering from OCD, a person with ‘Pure O’ will have compulsions. OCD-UKLike any person suffering from OCD, a person with ‘Pure O’ will have compulsions, some will manifest as unseen mental rituals, but importantly there will nearly always be physical outward compulsions too, making the term ‘Pure O’ imprecise. My OCD began with mild obsessions and compulsions that developed when I was around 15, and slowly worsened throughout my GCSEs and A-Levels. It wasn’t until university that I realised what I was dealing with might be OCD. Like many people, I found that the stress of moving to university, living alone and starting my degree brought up every little mental health thing I’d been pushing to one side.

It's very common for those of us with OCD to worry about whether we really have OCD. This is sometimes called 'meta OCD'.

Did you know that the human mind processes anywhere between 50,000 to upwards of 70,000thoughts in any given day? Obviously, not all of those thoughts are conscious. And, not all of those thoughts are unique. Many of the thoughts are repeated and replayed in our subconscious minds. They stem from our deepest and most darkest fears. These are the what-if scenarios that we can’t seem to escape no matter what we do. Indefrey, P., and W. J. M. Levelt. 2004. The spatial and temporal signatures of word production components. Cognition 92: 101–144. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cognition.2002.06.001. To add to that equation, as humans, our bodies are made up of 99.9999% empty space. The atoms in our bodies, at their most finite scales, are simply empty space, held together by electrical charges. On a quantum level, things get even stranger. Those atoms can actually appear in two places at the same time, which is called quantum superposition. Matter exists in a variety of forms and states due to complexquantum wave functions. So, what we’re experiencing and feeling isn’t quite 100% real, so to speak. Yes, there’s no denying the power of your thoughts. There’s no hiding from something that’s so real and exact that it can either be harnessed for good, or leveraged for extreme bad. But what are thoughts exactly? How do they work? Is everything in our lives right now the product of our thoughts? Have we truly manifested whatever reality we might be experiencing at this moment in time? Understanding Your Thoughts It is worth noting that some of these suggestions allow for unconscious inner speech, while others explicitly tie inner speech to consciousness. Some require phonologically specified inner speech, while others do not. Still others seem to require that the inner speech utterance in question not be phonologically specified, for example, if it serves to reduce cognitive load or to broadcast information throughout the cognitive system. However, another problem that arises is that the human mind is a computer that’s been pre-conditioned. It has some software that’s installed at birth in the form of our DNA, but after that, every new experience is another memory logged that might create a variety of functions. As we grow older, those functions turn into habits. But at the very basal level, everything is created by our thoughts and how we perceive things.

Effective timemanagement is a skill that some of the most successful people on earth institute. We all have the same amount of time in this world, no matter who we are. However, it’s how we use that time wisely that dictates just what we’re capable of achieving. Let me sum up. The claim that we think in language is as old a claim as it is hard to spell out in exact terms. I tried to spell it out by drawing on recent work on inner speech. To that end, I proposed that inner speaking be defined as a mental episode that substantially engaged the speech production system (at least up to the level of lemma representation). And while many agree that inner speech is somehow cognitively beneficial, the extent to which (and the manner in which) it is implicated in thinking is still a matter of some controversy.

God tells us, in the book of Phillipians, to consistently set our minds in three directions: on glory above, on beauty below, and on people around. 1. Set your mind on glory above. So what or who are you allowing to influence you in your life? Take a moment to ask the Holy Spirit to help you evaluate the following in your life: Wynne, C. D. L., and M. A. R. Udell 32020. Animal Cognition: Evolution, Behavior and Cognition. London: Red Globe Press. Convinced or not, I encourage you to take some time to think this through…are your thoughts moving you in the direction that you’d like your life to be heading? You might have intrusive worries or doubts about whether your OCD is real or serious enough. You might worry that you’ve lied to people or wasted people's time by seeking support. Or you might worry that you're using OCD to cover up the fact that your intrusive thoughts are true.
