About this deal

The near-luminous sapphire and violet colors of this popular flower, coupled with its tall, elongated stem, make it instantly recognizable. Ohe’ Ohe is a small tree that grows up to 25 feet tall. The spreading branches that come from one straight trunk produce long rope-like strands covered in up to 250 small, pale yellow flowers. The throats of each flower are white and pink in color, contrasting with the wispy-like thin petals. The tree usually drops its leaves during the summer blooming season. Ma’ohi’ohi This Hawaiian flower is often called the Hawaiian Mint. Give the plant a sheltered position in the house or garden in summer. This will prevent excessive leaf drop. The Hawaiian Palm has an atypical growth season, with the main growth taking place in the winter months and the dormant period in summer. It will start to grow vigorously again from August.

Blue Morning Glory grows as a vine, typically climbing trellises or other structures. It has heart-shaped leaves and produces flowers that are blue or purple in color. These flowers can be up to four inches in diameter and have a delicate, almost translucent appearance. Sometimes known as the Moloka’i Treecotton, this plant can only be found in Hawaii, but sadly, not in the wild. It now only exists as a cultivated plant, and the last wild specimen died in the early 1990s. The latest count suggests that only 23 grafted plants live, making it one of the rarest plants in the world.Hibiscus clayi: You will find this species with red flowers with petals that are a bit smaller than the rest of the other species.

Part of the Hibiscus family, its delicate, inch-wide flowers stand out from the greenery courtesy of its deep orange, golden, and yellowy hue. 7. Silver Geranium (Hinahina) Named for the silky hairs that line its leaves and create a silvery sheen, the Silver Geranium is a perennial shrub that’s often found at higher altitudes – especially in dry, open areas of Hawaii. Hinanhina, also known as Geranium Cuneatum, is a small, perennial plant that is native to Hawaii and New Zealand. Hinahina has small, deeply-divided leaves with a dark green color on the top and a lighter green on the bottom. The plant also produces small, white flowers that bloom in the summertime. Croton plants are known for being robust, dependable shrubbery. The leaves of this plant have a variety of colors, such as orange, red, purple and yellow with spotted and streaked patterns. The green-leaf croton is native to Fiji and other islands west of Australia. In Hawaii, the colored-leaf varieties are the most commonly seen yard plants. They can grow up to 12 feet (3.7 m) tall and are often trimmed as hedges. Hawaiian lilyAlthough Ixora is a genus comprised of more than 400 species, Ixora coccinea — also known as ixora, flame of the woods or jungle flame — is the type most commonly grown in the home landscape. A rounded, evergreen shrub that reaches heights of 4 to 6 feet or more, ixora displays shiny, leathery leaves and masses of blooms that appear throughout most of the year. Depending on the variety, ixora is available in shades of red, yellow, orange or pink. Glory Bush This is a critically endangered flowering shrubendemic to Hawaii. It is part of the mallow family, Malvaceae. It can reach heights of up to 10 feet, and the flowers are often hidden by the larger leaves. But up close, the flowers are charming, hibiscus-like. The most common color is red, but other colors include pink, salmon, maroon, purple, and butter. The staminal column is yellow to green in color, highlighting the elongated stamens. The bloom is curved, highlighting a clear evolutionary relationship between flower and pollinator. This flower is pollinated by the Amakihi bird, whose bill is also curved. The stems are square in shape with four flat sides. The long blooms are magenta, purple, or white in color, with long protruding stamens. This plant is common in foreststhat are weed and ginger-controlled. Alulu is one of the most unique and special endemic Hawaiian flowers. Often referred to as ‘Aka ‘Aka ‘Aka, it’s the lone species of the Hillebrandia branch of the Begoniaceae family and the only known relict plant in Hawaii. In other words, Alulu’s a remnant of a group of plants that once flourished but is now otherwise extinct.

This plant has become popular to cultivate at home because of its easy care requirements; moderate temperatures and spaces with partial sun exposure are perfect for the Blue Morning Glory. With proper care, the flowers can bloom consistently during the summer and throughout the fall months. Nehe is a perennial herbaceous subshrub that grows up to eight inches tall. It can grow in both sunny and shaded areas and can withstand drought conditions as well as periods of heavy rainfall. This makes it a popular choice for gardens and landscaping in Hawaii. 3. Kou ( Cordia subcordata) is also one of the four host plants for the Kamehameha Butterfly (Pulelehua) of which I have all four species in this post. They are ʻAkolea, Māmaki, Olonā, and Ōpuhe. This flowering shrub is relatively common in its natural habitat. Still, it is rarely seen in cultivation despite being easy to grow. Goblet-shaped flowers bloom in large clusters with fluffy centers surrounded by bracts that are bright and spiky. Proteas were named after the Greek god Proteus, son of Poseidon, who had the ability to transform himself into many different shapes. These plants are known for their unusual and beautiful flowers, which seem rather mythological themselves, like blooms from an alien landscape—some can reach 12 inches across. Proteas are considered to be among the oldest of flowering plants. Heliconia lobster claw Adren J. Bird; Steven Goldsberry; J. Puninani Kanekoa Bird (1982). The Craft of Hawaiian Lauhala Weaving.
