About this deal

Still, there’s an on/off switch that’s easy to reach at the base of the handle, along with a button for operating the rotating brush bar. We like this feature of the Hoover vacuum, as a powered brush bar can cause issues on hard floors. What it doesn’t have is a fluffy roller for hard floor cleaning. You can switch off the rotating brush bar if you’re working on delicate floors, but you can’t switch it out for an alternative. Good performance, an Automatic mode and neat onboard storage help make this a decent vacuum cleaner – but attaching the hose to use the accessories is super-fiddly. Hoover H-Upright 500 Plus design and features – Excellent storage and easy to use, but the hose is fiddly You get a couple of accessories with the Hoover H-Upright 500 Reach. The long crevice tool is good to see, as most recent vacuums have a shorter version that’s much less useful. That said, you don’t get a pet attachment included, so it’s not as versatile for clearing up after your furry friends in other areas. There is a pet model available that includes the tool and is a better option if you have animals. Hoover H-Upright 500 Reach Price and Value for Money

At 6.1kg, the H-Upright 500 Reach is an average weight for an upright. But it’s heavier than models like the Shark NV702UK, which weighs 5.25kg. Similarly, the 1.5 litre capacity is fairly standard for an upright vacuum cleaner. Our biggest issue is the hose attachment. Every time you want to use it, you have to detach it from where it’s stored, clip it to the airflow, and then add the tool you want. It’s frustratingly inconvenient and inefficient. Filtration The flour test is just as problematic for some vacuums, but the Hoover HF500 performed well here, too. On hard floors, it collected 98% of the flour I spilled in a single pass, leaving only a very light but still visible dusting behind. For better all-round cleaning performance, the Shark IZ300UKT proved stronger in our tests. This has a soft roller for hard floors and can fold up for compact storage. It also comes with a greater number of tools and attachments, although it’s usually a bit more expensive, too. Note that this model can’t stand unsupported when extended, though, so you’ll always need to find somewhere to prop it up mid-clean. The long reach of this Hoover is enough to cover a whole flight of stairs, so you won’t need to balance the vac on a step. But you will need the hose at its full stretch, which can cause some strange whistling sounds.

On hard floor, the brush bar automatically dropped down in speed. However, I still found it to be a bit vigorous, with some of the scattering of rice grains being pushed around on the floor. Int his scenario I found that it was better to use the vacuum cleaner with the brush bar turned off. So, how does this Hoover compare to other upright vacuums on the market? Does the extra reach make cleaning easier? Read our Hoover H-Upright 500 Reach review for all the details. Overview of the Hoover H-Upright 500 Reach’s Features You have a range of floor types in your home: Be it hard floor, short pile or long pile carpets, the Hoover H-Upright 500 Sensor Plus’ main selling point is its automatic sensor technology, which detects which floor type it is vacuuming and adjusts it accordingly. It also has a very flexible head so you can zoom around and under furniture. Don't buy it if... Lastly, if you've tried all of the above and you're still experiencing a loss of suction, it's probably due to the motor. Now you can replace the motor, it's not the easiest of jobs but it's certainly doable and you may find that you don't need to replace the whole motor, just the carbon brushes in the motor.

If you're experiencing a loss of suction in your Hoover upright vacuum cleaner, then it'll be due to one of five reasons: As you can see from the chart below, the Hoover HF500 more or less holds its own in terms of suction power. However, it’s worth noting that the vacuum only has two power settings, where some rivals have three. For example, the Shark IZ300UKT has a standard power setting whose suction sits between its weakest and most powerful settings, designed for everyday cleaning. The HF500 has only standard and Turbo modes, so its standard suction is only a little better than the Shark model’s lightest, most economical setting. The HEPA filter on the Hoover H-Upright 500 Reach is a pleasant surprise for a vac in this price range. HEPA filters are effective for trapping particles, so are a good option for allergy sufferers. I found this cleaner easy to push around and it’s pretty flexible, too. However, the H-Upright 500 Plus’ large body means that it may be difficult to get it under all furniture. Shark solves this problem with its Lift-Away range of cleaners, which let you remove the cylinder to push the floor head around on the wand alone. If there’s one feature you can rely on Hoover to deliver, it’s neat onboard storage for all of its tools. The H-Upright 500 Plus doesn’t disappoint in this regard. Here, the motorised floor brush is attached to the base, while the other accessories clip around the body, including the 2-in-1 crevice tool and brush, the extra-long crevice tool and the attachable hose.

The Hoover H-Upright 500 Sensor Plus has a 11m cord, which means you can travel quite a way around your home before you need to stop and re-plug. A 4.5m hose also allows it the stretch it needs to clean up to 13 stairs at a time - this means you can leave the vacuum at the bottom of the stairs rather than having to balance the cleaner on each step. At 0.45l, the collection bin is relatively compact for a full-size cordless, so you can be pretty certain that it will need emptying at the end of most significant cleaning jobs. Storage space is tight: At 113.5cm high and 6.25kg in weight, this isn’t the lightest design you can buy and older folk may find it cumbersome. For something that’s easily portable up the stairs you may want to consider a cordless or cylinder model instead.

Unfortunately, we can’t say it does. The suction power isn’t great, and hard floors are a real struggle. You don’t get many attachments, and the ones you do get aren’t the best quality. The bagless design also puts more weight on the top of the vacuum cleaner, adding to the overall strain to keep it in a straight line. Even the long 10m power cord has a tedious manual rewind, although we probably wouldn’t expect an automatic rewind function from such a budget vacuum.Of course, the proof of the pudding is in the cleaning, so to speak. We tested the HF500 with our usual suite of challenging tests, spilling both flour and Cheerios on both carpet and hard floor, then measuring how much the vacuum collects on a single pass. However, the battery performed well in its Turbo mode, delivering 13 mins 15 secs of cleaning before giving out. The other saving grace is that the battery takes only 2.5 hours to fully recharge, which is significantly faster than most rivals. This is an excellent, compact upright for those who want comprehensive carpet cleaning, but perhaps not for those with hard floors. The good
