During the era of public execution in London, England, a prominent gallows stood at Tyburn, on what is now Marble Arch. Later executions occurred outside Newgate Prison, where the Old Bailey now stands.

The Upper Ray catchment is well-known regionally as a stronghold for wading birds with iconic species like Curlew and Lapwing using the Upper Ray’s extensive network of species rich grassland, floodplain and wetlands.

The bypass and bridge were designed and managed by the county surveyor, Andrew Warren. Construction proper started in October 1934. Kennet opened to the public at Gallows Bridge, close to the old junction with the Bradford Canal. A Society member led a public walk along the remains of the Bradford Canal. Despite 100 years passing, there are still a surprising number of canal structures which survive. The construction of the bridge carrying the Exeter bypass over the Honiton Road, just east of Gallows Corner, was part of the second phase of the new Exeter bypass in the 1930s. The first phase, from Pinhoe Road to Hill Barton railway bridge was completed by 1933. The second phase to Countess Wear was put out to tender in September 1933, and by August 1934, was progressing well. An innovation of the route was the bridge (referred to in the press as a 'flyover') over the A30, Honiton Road, a way of avoiding a roundabout or road junction. A slip road was planned to allow access from Honiton to the bypass. The section between Hill Barton and Countess Wear was opened on Saturday 27 April 1935, when the contractors removed the barriers to allow traffic for the first time. Official opening

The term " gallows" was derived from a Proto-Germanic word galgô that refers to a "pole", "rod" or "tree branch". [1] With the beginning of Christianization, Ulfilas used the term galga in his Gothic Testament to refer to the cross of Christ, until the use of the Latin term (crux = cross) prevailed.
