Wealthy people began to build up personal libraries; Philip the Bold probably had the largest personal library of his time in the mid-15th century, is estimated to have had about 600 illuminated manuscripts, whilst a number of his friends and relations had several dozen. It is often referenced as the “king of illuminated manuscripts” because of the incredible grandeur of the miniatures and the obvious artistic skill required to create it. The sun, moon, and clouds tell the story of chapter 10, where God prolonged the length of day so that Joshua and his armies could defeat the Amorites. But of course it would also be a scene that the monks could have observed in their Scottish wilderness.
