About this deal

Though much of Lamentations is marked by expressions of sorrow and regret, the final word is hope in God’s mercy to sinners. One of the most popular included mixing the gold with stag's glue and then "pour it into water and dissolve it with your finger.

Wealthy people began to build up personal libraries; Philip the Bold probably had the largest personal library of his time in the mid-15th century, is estimated to have had about 600 illuminated manuscripts, whilst a number of his friends and relations had several dozen. The most sumptuous works that they produced are now described as ‘illuminated’, meaning that they are enhanced by the application of gold or silver and painted or drawn decoration.Books were produced there in large numbers and on paper for the first time in Europe, and with them full treatises on the sciences, especially astrology and medicine where illumination was required to have profuse and accurate representations with the text. Many artists worked collaboratively in loose associations or partnerships in major towns and cities such as London, Paris, Utrecht, Rome and Bruges.

In reality, illuminators were often well known and acclaimed and many of their identities have survived. Also [we declare] that one may render to them [icons] the veneration of honour; not the true worship of our faith, which is due only to the divine nature, but the same kind of veneration as is offered to the form of the precious and life-giving cross, to the holy gospels, and to the other holy dedicated items. Her latest publications are with Charlotte Denoël, Medieval Illumination: Manuscript Art in England and France 700–1200 (2018), also available in French, and with Scot McKendrick, The Art of the Bible: Illuminated Manuscripts from the Medieval World (2016), which has been translated into Dutch, French, German and Italian. Illuminators had to be very careful when applying gold leaf to the manuscript because gold leaf is able to "adhere to any pigment which had already been laid, ruining the design, and secondly the action of burnishing it is vigorous and runs the risk of smudging any painting already around it. Here the first words of each Gospel and of St Jerome’s letters are expanded to fill much of the page, and are intricately decorated with complex patterns.

The creators of this Bible maintain the rights to the English Standard Version, so they don’t print the Apocrypha. The apple signifies the fall of man, separation from the Creator, and, ultimately, the need for redemption. No wonder, then, that so many illuminated manuscripts of the Bible were treasured in their day for more than their material value, and gained the status of gifts worthy of saints and kings. In the early centuries of Christianity, " Gospel manuscripts were sometimes written entirely in gold".Printed on thick cream-colored paper, the Bible's single-column text setting and wide margins provide generous space for additional notes, prayers, and designs—inviting readers to creatively engage with and reflect on the beauty of God's Word. After fighting in the Cromwellian period, the church at Kells lay in ruins, and in 1653 the book was sent to Dublin by the governor of Kells for safekeeping. At Smarthistory we believe art has the power to transform lives and to build understanding across cultures.

It is often referenced as the “king of illuminated manuscripts” because of the incredible grandeur of the miniatures and the obvious artistic skill required to create it. The sun, moon, and clouds tell the story of chapter 10, where God prolonged the length of day so that Joshua and his armies could defeat the Amorites. But of course it would also be a scene that the monks could have observed in their Scottish wilderness.

Vespasiano de Bisticci claims that the great bibliophile Federigo da Montefeltro, Duke of Urbino, would have felt shame to have had a printed book in his library. The Morgan Crusader Bible was originally a work only of full-color illustrations, but later owners seem to have felt compelled to add text to complement the images.
