The Gold Label Johnnie Walker joined the core range in 1995 as the second of three expansions to the range in the 90’s. It originally carried an age statement of 18 years but that was removed when the Platinum 18 Year Old was released in 2012.Uniquely, the Green Label by Johnnie Walker is a bit of anomaly within their range. Unlike the rest of their bottles, this edition is the only one to exclude grain whiskies using only single malts in it’s 15 year old blend. Johnnie Walker Aged 18 Years is an indulgent blend of up to 18 different whiskies each chosen for their remarkable depth of flavour and character and was previously known as Johnnie Walker Platinum Label. It's a pity that even the higher-end JW Blends are bottled at 40%. The 18 Years at least requires 43% and probably a bit more. As it is the initial feeling on the Nose is a bit Weak and Thin. It's not bad but just too Light. The Grain Alcohol is notable of course but in a Softer way. The Nose is basically Sweet with Fruits, Cereals and Caramel in the lead.

Blend-lovers, it's nothing massively special but you will always get bonus points from anyone you serve this to unless they're a single malt person. The finish is long and lingering. The creamy flavours dark chocolate gives way to touches of honey and buttery vanilla before finally fading out into gentle smoky notes. It’s truly a delightful experience that’s enough to convert my single malt snobbishness. This whisky is utterly tremendous. The final Johnnie Walker whisky in the core range to carry an age statement is the 18 Year Old blend, the oldest of the age statement whiskies. The 18 Year Old was known as the Platinum Label from 2012 until before being re-branded in 2017. In a very fitting coincidence, there are up to 18 different whiskies included in this blend. By 1920, Johnnie Walker had become a global brand selling blended whisky in 120 different countries, including the continual selling of whisky in North America illegally during the Prohibition era. In 1932 the Johnnie Walker Swing was released, marketed specifically toward North American consumers and travellers on trans-Atlantic liners. These bottles were designed with a convex base so that they would swing with the movement of the ocean liners. This convex base is still a feature of some Johnnie Walker bottles.Diageo has released a short film depicting Beveridge looking for the “ultimate” 18-year-old blended Scotch to support the launch – see below. Both these brands are top players in the blended Scotch category. Whilst Chivas aren’t quite as mainstream, their Speyside orientated blends were a delight to sample. Nose: Honeyed cereals, Cadbury's Fruit and Nut, distant bonfire smoke, clementine and spring blossom. As much as I love the JW18, the Chivas Regal 18 is a truly stunning blend. It’s got these wonderful fruity spiced flavours that really dance in your glass. For me, it’s got fantastic depth and nostalgically reminds me of my grandmother’s home made marmalade on toast. There’s a beautiful zing to this whisky but with adult-level spice and complexity.
