Many people believe that when they’ll use a sunscreen with a high SPF, that they’re protected from the sun. The term SPF (Sun Protection Factor) is actually quite misleading as it only measures the amount of UVB rays being absorbed. It doesn’t take into account UVA rays, which are more damaging to the skin in the long run as UVA rays penetrate the skin deeper and generate more free radicals. UVA rays prematurely ages skin and breaks down collagen.

We would like to stress that standard mineral (zinc and titanium) and chemical sunscreens are safe to be used for sun protection. Chemical sunscreens: They are also known as organic sunscreens or synthetic sunscreens. These are the most commonly used sunscreen and work by absorbing the UV light and releasing as heat. The following chemicals (amongst others) will denote a chemical sunscreen: Most sunscreens on the market today contain a variety of chemical sunscreens that have been proven in numerous scientific studies to either irritate the skin and to varying degrees are harmful to our health. For example, the UV-absorbing chemical Oxybenzone enhances the skin penetration of other chemical sunscreen ingredients and has been linked to skin irritation and disruption of hormonal balance (acts like estrogen). In addition, most of these chemical sunscreen ingredients will build up in our bodies over time, without being broken down by the liver. The best sunscreen is the one you will use regularly and in the correct quantities. The type of sunscreen will be dependent on the type of outdoor activity you’ll be engaged in or your skin type. There are a variety of sunscreen types you can choose from:An SPF of 30 allows about 3% of UVB to penetrate the skin and SPF 50 about 2%. This does not seem much but can make a big difference in certain skin types. How do I protect against UVA radiation? Not only do the chemical ingredients irritate the skin, many of these sunscreens are also waterproof. Sunscreens are made waterproof by adding various forms of silicone, an ingredient that can also prevent the skin to breathe, which results in trapped heat. Water resistant: These are good for use during water activities, they will need to be reapplied, however no sunscreen is truly waterproof. UVB: These rays cause skin burning and reddening.
