We have travelled far, Babushka,” they said, “and we stop to tell you of the Baby Prince born this night in Bethlehem. He comes to rule the world and teach all men to be loving and true. We carry Him gifts. Come with us, Babushka.”

Mary: Now I’m beginning to understand! You men! Always thinking we can drop everything, just like that! I’m sorry I may have seemed to be criticising you earlier on. I can see now you just needed a little time! It was the night the dear Christ-Child came to Bethlehem. In a country far away from Him, an old, old woman named Babushka sat in her snug little house by her warm fire. The wind was drifting the snow outside and howling down the chimney, but it only made Babushka’s fire burn more brightly. With her staff she raps gently at the doors and goes inside and holds her candle close to the little children’s faces.Baboushka, meaning 'grandmother' in Russian, was a lonely old woman who used to live in solitude in a huge house. It is said that it was Baboushka who started the tradition of gift-giving on Christmas. She was a kind-hearted woman and often provided food and refuge to weary travelers. They have gone to Egypt, and safety. The kings have returned to their countries, but one of them told me about you. I am sorry, but you are too late,” he told Babushka. The palace,” she thought. “That’s where the royal baby would be born.” But when Babushka got to the door, she was disappointed. ”No, there is no royal baby here,” said the palace guard when she asked him. It was so cold the night Jesus was born. The fire in the stable was slowly dying. Who could keep them warm? This picture book retells a Christmas Russian folktale. One Christmas Eve, the Three Wise Men pay a visit to an elderly woman. They tell her how they are following a star to find baby Jesus and invite her to join them. She declines but regrets her decision and sets off after them. Thus, she is transformed into an immortal figure on an endless search.Babushka shook herself. There was no time for dreaming, all this washing-up and putting away had to be done. Very good and very entertaining! The children enjoyed all the songs and we enjoyed producing the show. Meanwhile the kings had found the baby, with Mary and Joseph in a stable. (Put up the OHT – the kings can place their gifts on the floor.) Spiders, however, had seen the sadness of the family, and during the night, they decorated the whole Christmas tree with their webs. When the Christ child saw it, he changed the webs into strands of silver and gold. Legend says that she is still looking, and that each time she passes a house where small children live, she leaves small gifts for them in honour of the special baby she seeks.

She cleaned all of the toys until each one shined. Babushka looked through the window, and it was morning. The star had came and gone. The kings would have also found somewhere else to rest by now. She could easily catch up with them, but she felt so tired she had to sleep. The search for the kings This Retelling's History - A century ago, this retelling of the story was given to a distant relative, Howard Neal, in a little book published by the Saalfield Publishing Company in 1903 (it had been previously published by the Werner Company in 1899). Unfortunately, the the author's name was not included in the book. This Babushka Story PowerPoint could be used with a whole class or with small groups of EYFS or KS1 children. New Year is also when 'Grandfather Frost' (known in Russian as 'Ded Moroz' or Дед Мороз) brings presents to children. He is always accompanied by his Granddaughter (Snegurochka). On New Year's eve children hold hands, make a circle around the Christmas tree and call for Snegurochka or Ded Moroz. When they appear the star and other lights on the Christmas tree light up! Ded Moroz carries a big magic staff. The traditional greeting for Happy New Year is 'S Novym Godom'.

Christmas Around the World

The kings were very pleased when they saw all of the of the homemade bread, pies and cakes. She dashed about, serving them, asking lots of questions. She missed the star as it shone in the sky, and she missed the little line of twinkling lights coming down towards the village at dawn. She didn’t hear the sounds of the pipes and drums playing music, and she missed her neighbours whispering in wonder at what the lights were. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, people were free to celebrate Christmas again. But it's still a quieter and smaller holiday in Russia after the big New Year celebrations. So, she put on her woolen scarf, wore her cloak, carried a basket with treats for the new born baby and walked into the cold unknown. From village to village, Baboushka travelled and retold the story about the three wise men and the special baby to everybody she met, but the villagers could not help her. She looked closely at every child she saw, hoping to identify the much-talked-about baby. On realizing they were not, she would leave immediately but not before she left them with a small gift, while they slept soundly in their beds. Baboushka travelled for years but she still did not find that special child, who was in fact, Jesus Christ. Some say that if Baboushka still lived, she might have still been looking for him. Immediately he saw his chance. He took his coat, got his drum, and stepped outside. However, the people outside looked strange. Three rich men were sitting on camels, guided by servants.
