Looking for a grey stain for your next DIY project? We’ve put 10 different grey stain colors to the test so you can see what they look like on actual wood. It can be difficult getting it right for your project & so we'd like to offer two ways of helping. The first is telephone support, the second is project specification for contractors. As is characteristic of pine and 2x lumber, you can see that most of the stains enhanced the yellow wood grain. Pay attention to the undertones in the gray stain choices and make sure they work well with the permanent fixtures in your home. Also, depending on the wood species you choose to stain, the color will come out lighter or darker, so do make sure to sample the stain options on scrap pieces of the wood species you want to stain. The richest of all the gray stain options we considered, carbon gray is truly a beautiful stain color. It’s hard to tell from this photo (you can see it better in the side-by-side photo above) but I could see hints of blue undertones in this stain option, giving way to a very dark navy gray wood stain color. This process starts immediately as soon as your teak furniture is standing outside. Aging and discoloration is natural and you should take this into account when purchasing teak garden furniture. You can maintain / restore this natural color for a longer period with Teak Protector. If you apply this product, you will color the teak in the color that best mimics the original color. Classic Gray is probably the most natural looking out of all the grey stain options I reviewed. I also felt like this stain had more of a gray-brown hue than any of the others, so it’s a really good option if you’re looking for a middle of the road grey stain, that’s been warmed with some brown undertones. DIFFERENT TREATMENTS

After the treatment(s) with Teak Cleaner (and possibly a color-influencing product), let the teak dry and add a treatment of 4 Seasons Outdoor – Teak Shield. This adds a transparent layer that is dirt and water repellent. Teak Shield prevents the most common stains, but we do recommend immediate cleaning when your teak has become dirty. Despite the use of Teak Shield, some stains can still cause permanent discoloration (such as tomato sauce) if you leave them on for a long time. In our kids’ bathroom renovation, we decided to plank the ceiling in pine and use a gray wood stain to finish it. I wanted more of the weathered gray wood stain look, so naturally, we tested out several different gray stain colors until we found our favorite. Though it doesn’t always stain consistently, I’d say the stain colors turned out well. Since poplar is known for it green and brown streaks, we tried to include a piece of a green streak on every sample so you can get a better idea of how it stains on different colors of poplar. Grey Stain Colors on Red Oak Of the stain colors we tested, this one to me seemed to be the most “true” gray. That’s tough to stay though what a “true” gray is because grey always has different undertones! Varathane Smoke Gray The Warm Grey Wood Stain and Protect forms a long lasting waterproof coating that won’t need re-treating for years. This wood stain is plant and pet friendly and works well at protecting your timber from the weather and mould. Wood Protector Cedar wood stain is suitable for both rough sawn and planed timber. It can also be used to colour terracotta and masonry. The superior formulation of this product allows it to be applied to terracotta pots and masonry (will adhere to any material that is porous).For your reference, we painted all of these gray stain options on pine and just used one coat, as we felt it adequately covered the wood well. Of all of the wood types we tested, I think the stains looked the best on red oak plywood. It always accepts stain well! Advice: 2 coats are recommended with further coats increasing the solidity of the colour. Wood Stain + Protect is a wood stain coating so will wear off over time. If applying Wood Stain + Protect to a garden building that will be subjected to high levels of exposure to weather, it is recommended that you apply Protek Clear Tough Coat as a top coat. In recent years there has been controversy around cutting wood and teak and this was done in an irresponsible way for a long time, which caused forests and nature to suffer greatly from logging. Years ago, various certificates and foundations were created that regulate the felling of these types of wood. Well-known organizations include FSC and PEFC that certify when the whole process complies with the directive. All our garden furniture and teak components are equipped with a legal FSC or an SVLK/V-legal certificate that complies with the latest EUTR rules in force since 2013, and we only use teak that originates from legal plantations. Trees are planted here that are suitable for timber extraction after at least 15 years.
