About this deal

SSDs are far superior to HHDs when it comes to write and read speeds. As a result, they come with significantly smaller capacity. But, this has changed slowly. We now have SSDs with a 1 TB of capacity or more. SanDisk Extreme Pro leverages our lightning-fast in-house NVMe technology to dramatically increase transfer speeds to up to 1050 MB/s 6 and fully saturate the USB 3.1 Gen 2 interface. 6 So you’ll be able to edit right from the drive – providing full-frame editing with little interruption while saving you time and keeping your computer’s internal storage free. Editor’s Note, August 17, 2023: As recently reported in Ars Technica , a critical mass of users on SanDisk’s forums and Reddit have reported failures of some SanDisk Extreme, Extreme Pro, Extreme V2, and Extreme Pro V2 SSDs, resulting in data loss, as well as the drives becoming unreadable/unmountable. In May, parent company WD released firmware updates for the 4TB SanDisk Extreme, as well as the 4TB, 2TB, and 1TB Extreme Pro models, plus the 4TB Western Digital My Passport, but complaints continue. We are doing our own stress-testing of the sample drives we originally reviewed. As of today, however, we no longer recommend buying any of the aforementioned SSDs, until we are satisfied the issue has been resolved. ( A class-action suit has been levied against WD surrounding issues with these drives.) We have left our original review in place here for reference.]

It is good to know that 500 MB/s is considered to be a good read speed for an average SSD. Then we can see how fast both of these models are when compared to other SSDs on the market. However, in this particular comparison, SanDisk is superior. Samsung is a large company that manufactures various devices such as flash memories, smartphones, and TVs. So, they are one of the leaders when it comes to technology. Their offering also includes high-quality SSD devices, including the Samsung T7 model.

Game Smarter

Since we have a lot of different devices today, we like to have compact devices that don’t take too much space. Therefore, Samsung T7 is a much better choice when it comes to dimensions. Since there is no formal IP rating for the Samsung model, the SanDisk model prevails in this category. Up to three-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance 5 mean this durable drive can take a beating. Water and Dust Resistance:With an IP55 rating, it’s protected against both water and dust, making it suitable for various settings. The Samsung T7 model is an excellent choice if you are looking for a fast SSD with 256-AES data encryption. What makes it stand out in the crowd is its simple, beautiful, and lightweight design. It is a small and compact SSD that comes in several colors and at an affordable price. It also has a great thermal solution to control the heat and comes with drop protection.

The evaluation routine for direct-attached storage devices – portable SSDs, storage bridges (including RAID enclosures), and memory cards – all utilize the same testbed and have similar workloads with slight tweaks based on the end market for the product. Our testbeds have kept pace with the introduction of new external interfaces - Thunderbolt 2, Thunderbolt 3, and USB 3.2 Gen 2 via Type-C. In mid-2014, we prepared a custom desktop based on Haswell, which was then upgraded to Skylake in early 2016. A botched Thunderbolt 3 firmware upgrade on the Skylake machine meant that we had to shift to the Hades Canyon NUC starting in early 2019. This year, we have adopted the Quartz Canyon NUC (essentially, the Xeon / ECC version of the Ghost Canyon NUC) along with build components from ADATA Industrial - 2x 16GB DDR4-3200 ECC SODIMMs and a PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe SSD - the IM2P33E8 1TB. SanDisk also covers the aluminium chassis in a silicon shell to make the drive nice and rugged, and it feels like a high-quality item but the coating seems to collect a bit of fluff.Ruggedized design with a forged aluminum body to protect the SSD core and dissipate heat. Plus, a durable silicon rubber coating seeks to deliver higher impact resistance with its IP55 rating for water and dust resistance. 1 The data transfer speeds quoted by SanDisk give an indication of the potential of the Extreme Pro Portable SSD V2, but the actual performance that you get depends upon your computer and the connection that you use. For example, when the drive was connected to a 2019 iMac via one of the USB-C/Thunderbolt ports I was able to transfer 9.74GB of images comprising 100 Jpegs and 100 raw files from the 45.7Mp Nikon Z7 II to it in around 1 minute 40 seconds. That same folder of images transferred from the drive to the desktop of the iMac in just over a minute. Switch to using a 2022 MacBook Air with the M2 chip and the transfer times drop to 11 seconds and 13 seconds respectively.
