About this deal

Under de Nonancourt, Laurent-Perrier were the first House to use stainless-steel vats and the first House to create both a zero dosage champagne (Ultra Brut) and a non-vintage prestige cuvée (Grand Siècle). Tart raspberries, peppery green herbs, a small but intense sweet-salty-dark-sharp note of balsamic vinegar. Its bubbles are insistent, finely carved and add to the early sensations of lightness and energy yet also carry the wine long into a balanced, refined finish. the wine then spends an extra year in the cellar, ageing for a total of four years on the lees before release. It’s citrus and white fruit notes and its remarkable balance, supported by a subtle effervescence, make it an ideal accompaniment to poultry and the finest fish.

The latter, widow and mother of four children, acquired the Domaine Laurent-Perrier and ran the business while two of her sons, Maurice and Bernard, joined the French Resistance. Not my personal favourite style but it's certainly true to the ordained style and a lot of care goes into making it. Laurent-Perrier maintain the quality of their non-vintage wines by limiting the release of vintage products to give their cuvees a high proportion of top-quality juice. On July 7th, 2023, Maximilien Bernardeau was appointed Cellar Master and Wine Manager of the Laurent-Perrier Group, reporting to Michel Fauconnet. After changing hands through several deaths and marriages, it was Bernard de Nonancourt who initiated Laurent-Perrier's rise to world fame.Laurent-Perrier was established in Tours-sur-Marne in 1812 and was the first family-owned independent Champagne House. Perfectly balanced, with crisp flavours and finesse, it is also an ideal companion for fish, poultry and white meat. We met with Cellar Master Michel Fauconnet to visit Laurent-Perrier's renovated cellars and conduct a vertical tasting of Brut Vintage and Grand Siècle (all from magnum) alongside Jancis Robinson MW.

Sadly, de Nonancourt passed away in 2010 and Laurent-Perrier is now managed by his two daughters, Alexandra and Stéphanie. Founded over 200 years ago in 1812, Laurent-Perrier is one of the most distinguished family-owned Champagne Houses. A blend of all three champagne grapes with Chardonnay making up almost half, giving a delicate, fresh style with good citrus fruit and toasty notes. A rare Rosé Champagne made using the maceration (skin contact) technique, perfectly controlled by the winery, to give that extraordinary depth and freshness - a worldwide benchmark for its style. The Grand Siecle concept is a blend of three great vintages, each bringing certain characteristics from different base years. There are no clues about disgorgement date or base vintage on the label – I couldn't even spot a lot number – but Nick Baker of The Finest Bubble kindly provided the lot code of the current cuvée – LP53UK35219E – and managed to persuade the chef de cave to divulge the background to it. Indeed, Laurent-Perrier are one of the most reductive in style, serving to enhance their fruity expression and smoky complexity. It's not going to keep quiet as you enjoy your Valentine's dinner but may do a certain amount of interrupting.
