About this deal

The 1955 conference of the ICPC - the precursor to Interpol - drew together government representatives, agents, and related stakeholders from around the world.

No markings to the text, there's a little bit of spotting in the front endpapers up to the start of Chapter One and a bit of spotting to the outer edges of the pages when viewed as a block, but otherwise the pages still look and feel tight and clean.Named as Ian Fleming’s finest novel in numerous polls, and described by the author as, ‘In many respects, my best book,’ this nail-biting thriller sees 007 ensnared by an elaborate plot devised by the Soviet counter-intelligence agency, SMERSH. While there he met the Oxford-educated ship owner Nazim Kalkavan, who became the model for Darko Kerim; [14] Fleming took down many of Kalkavan's conversations in a notebook, and used them verbatim in the novel. A used copy but with no significant defects; jacket darkened to spine, rubbed to joints with some chips and tears. Benson identifies Bond's fear when the flight to Istanbul encounters severe turbulence from a storm, and notes Bond's apparent nervousness when he first meets Romanova; he seems concerned and guilty about his mission. Kronsteen, SMERSH's chess-playing master planner, and Colonel Rosa Klebb, the head of Operations and Executions, devise the operation.

The reality must have given Fleming on more reminder that fiction is stranger and infinitely more satisfactory than truth. Bursting with action and intrigue, From Russia with Love is one of the best-loved books in the Bond canon - an instant classic that set the standard for sophisticated literary spycraft for decades to come. The offer of defection, ostensibly from Romanova, is received by MI6 in London, but is conditional on Bond collecting her and the Spektor from Istanbul. There's some minimal bumping to the bottom outer corners, a matter of millimetres, and there's a very minor bump at the top back corner of the spine and a little nudge to the outer edge of the front cover.

The serialisation of the story in The Daily Express in 1957 provided a boost to the sales of the book; [67] a bigger rise in sales was to follow four years later. Armed with the details provided by Grant, Bond goes to Grant's rendezvous with Rosa Klebb in Paris after contacting his friend René Mathis for assistance, including disposing of the Spektor, which is actually a useless booby-trapped bomb. As an added lure, Romanova will provide the British with a Spektor, a Russian decoding device much coveted by MI6. The series, which ran from 3 February to 21 May 1960, [79] was written by Henry Gammidge and illustrated by John McLusky. UK Cape editions of Fleming's best-selling James Bond series were imported by British overseas territories across the globe [Gilbert], as demonstrated by the present copy.

Fleming describes the volume as "an American omnibus Bond with an amusing introduction by Paul Gallico" and provided a favourable indication of prospects for the forthcoming year "so far as 1963 is concerned, you will probably be relieved to know that you stay alive! As bait, the Russians use a beautiful cipher clerk Tatiana Romanova and the Spektor, a Soviet decoding machine. Kennedy's brother Robert was also an avid reader of the Bond novels, as was Allen Dulles, the Director of Central Intelligence. In the main it was a faithful adaptation of the novel; the ending was changed to make clear Bond's survival. By January 1956 the author Ian Fleming had published three novels— Casino Royale in 1953, Live and Let Die in 1954 and Moonraker in 1955.Big in Live and Let Die, Bond has been declared as an enemy of the Soviet Union and has been issued a "death warrant" for immediate execution ("To be killed with ignominy"). Fleming makes numerous comments regarding the operations of various global intelligence services, Russian language, and culture - "Colours of folders. He wakes an unarmed Bond in the middle of the night to gloat before killing him as planned as the train goes into a tunnel. The boards are in very good condition, with no notable chips and marks to note, aside from a very slight lean.
