The Acer C720 looks and feels like a budget notebook, but we noticed some improvements from the company's previous Chromebooks. The C720 is Acer’s latest Chromebook and it improves on its predecessor, the Acer C7 , in almost every way. Therefore, if you read this review to the end, you will get to know the overall performance of this Acer Chromebook. The same Chrome OS customizations you’ll find on the Chromebook 11 (and nearly every other Chromebook in existence) also apply to the C720, with the function key row at the top wholly dedicated to hardware control buttons (such as brightness, audio, and power), and oversized CTRL and ALT keys filling the spaces on the left side. That may seem a smallish amount for both, but Chrome OS doesn't have to worry about keeping memory-intensive programs like anti-virus active in the background.

Like other Chromebooks, the C720-3404 comes with 12 free Gogo Internet passes and 100GB of Google Drive storage for two years. The performance is really great, battery life is good, it's built to take a beating and the keyboard is full-sized and easy to type on. Scrolling is still smooth even on heavy pages and with lots of tasks running at once, and the only thing I could find that choked up this Chromebook was playing full-screen 4K streaming video from YouTube — that isn't a light task, and when I dropped it down to 1440p the C740 could actually handle that with few hiccups. But it’s also young, bare, and rough around the edges, still unable to compare with the likes of Windows and Mac OS in terms of anything but the most basic functionality. While the HP brings back fond memories of the plastic MacBook, the Acer pretty much looks like any other small laptop.

The touchpad is a little too small, but it’s perfectly responsive and multitouch gestures such as two-finger scrolling worked beautifully. The HP Chromebook 11 far outshines the C70P, with a reading of 267 lux, but the C720P's display is still brighter than the nontouch C720 Acer Chromebook (123 lux). On the contrary, during general operation, things zipped to and fro and applications loaded quickly. Some might lament the changes Google has made to Chrome OS lately as ruining the focused, modal experience it used to offer (especially for writing), but features like a proper notification system and windowed apps make it a much more mature platform, and more familiar to the vast majority of computer users out there. Effortless updates are one of the selling points of Chromebooks, but options are available if you want to run other operating systems.Now the C720 is bringing the Pixel’s performance to the mass market, and even improving on the Pixel’s primary flaw: battery life. Forgiving that, however, there isn’t much else to criticize here: this is a touchpad that works as it’s supposed to. After streaming video on Hulu for 15 minutes, the touchpad reached only 80 degrees Fahrenheit, which is far below the 95-degree threshold we consider uncomfortable. Throughout our tests, we’re happy to report that we experienced absolutely no stuttering or hiccupping once things got underway and other processes stepped aside, which is a testament to the Celeron 2955U’s video decoding capability.
