She credits her hometown saying “Coventry is responsible for making me who I am, today, it gave me the opportunity to study, work & ultimately creatively find my voice with the 2-tone movement which has spearheaded the musical conversation about racism and sexism for the past 42 years.” We are coming up to that time of year when the beautiful and distinctive voice of Kirsty MacColl will be blasting out in bars and shops and being played regularly on radio and TV music […] Our co-headline tour with The Beat is heading to Germany, Finland, Norway, Sweden (SOLD OUT) & Denmark next month. See you there! In episode #150 of The XS Noize Podcast, Mark Millar meets Guitar legend Peter Frampton to talk about his recent live album – Peter Frampton At Royal Albert Hall. The Selecter - Human Algebra - The Arts Desk Album: The Selecter - Human Algebra - The Arts Desk

In October 2017 the band released a new studio album Daylight it was greeted with critical acclaim. Daylight looked at the modern world with classic Selecter energy, wit and danceability. What will be more surprising to most is that they’ve been almost consistently producing music since. This is their 16 th studio album. We are teaming up with The Beat in 2017, hitting the road together for a number of dates around the UK and Ireland. After our show at Shepherds Bush Empire sold out in record time, we have added a show at the iconic Roundhouse in Camden on Friday 6 October 2017. Well, she was 10 years older than all of us. And if Debbie Harry turns up, everybody looks like chopped liver, don’t they? I often look at the picture because I’ve got it in my toilet. We were all interested in one another, but I see the expressions on my and Poly’s faces and they’re decidedly different from the others’ expressions… We’re like: ‘What are we doing here? Where do we fit into all this?’ There were other photos taken, she says, where she and Poly weren’t included. Here is our North American West Coast tour with Rhoda Dakar, all dates are below & a NEW DATE has been added in Las Vegas! Meet & Greets are available at all shows!a b c G, Helen (20 March 2012). "Made in solidarity: The Selecter in the 21st century". The F Word . Retrieved 6 December 2016. From that time, she’s still friends with Rhoda Dakar, from the Bodysnatchers, but her closest friends are from when she was a radiographer. “Because I’m Miss Distrustful, Mistrustful. I don’t seek out people in the business, I don’t know how to hang out at parties and that kind of stuff. I’ve always been useless at that.” The Deluxe Edition of Too Much Pressure, released to celebrate its 40th Anniversary, entered the Official UK Charts on 30 April 2021 at #1 in the Vinyl Album Chart, #1 Independent Album and #24 in the full Official UK Album Chart In 2022, the Selecter toured the UK performing their second studio album Celebrate the Bullet (1981) in its entirety. Also, she was sexually abused, over a period of months, by an adult neighbour. Telling her parents led to an awful scene (they made her retell her story in front of the neighbour and his pregnant wife). Aged 10, she went into herself. I ask how she felt about the death of the Specials’ singer, Terry Hall. She says she was far closer to Ranking Roger, from the Beat, and was very upset when he died, in 2019 (one of the songs on Human Algebra, Parade the Crown, is a tribute). About Hall, she says: “I didn’t know Terry that well. I didn’t know Terry from the 2 Tone tour, and he just wasn’t a person that… We didn’t warm to each other, but I did admire his talent. His talent was mighty.”

Between 50 and 58 I didn’t know where the hell I was,” she says. “You know when people say that oestrogen is a problem? It’s not a bloody problem. That’s your life fuel. I think I always produced a surfeit of oestrogen; I have a sister, who I discovered much later, and she has the same thing. In menopause, your oestrogen drops, and all that live wire-ness disappears. And when you don’t have it, then you really, really know. I couldn’t have HRT for various reasons. I thought: ‘I’m going to die here.’”Forty-three years after The Selecter’s seminal debut album, Too Much Pressure, which still inspires and resonates today, can their sixteenth studio album, Human Algebra, claim a similar place in people’s affections? It is undoubtedly a high bar to clear. The Selecter reunited once again when the band travelled over to Belfast, Northern Ireland to play a show in the capital's annual Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival. [12] This was followed by an extensive tour of the UK, Europe, and in October 2014, New Zealand and Australia. [13] Very happy to finally officially announce our brand new studio album HUMAN ALGEBRA will be released on 21 April. Can’t wait to share it with you!
