About this deal

In this section, we’re going to compare the Art series lens with the original Sigma 24-70mm IF EX DG HSM lens and the stabilized Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8E ED VR. There are currently no full frame compatible zoom lenses available with apertures wider than f/2.8. You should compare it to the Panasonic 24-70/2.8 S Pro, Nikon 24-70/2.8 S, Canon 24-70/2.8 L USM RF, Sony GM 24-70/2.8 FE, because this Sigma will being much more expensive than the DSLR Counterpart, which was optically inferior, the DSLR 24-70/2.8 ART was a inferior design compared to the competition. Sigma won't make this experience twice.

The new Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN Art has its share of ghost and flare artifacts. At the short end it’s not too bothersome but at the long end it’s more pronounced. Have a look at the following comparison with the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 Di III:The acutance profile below shows the sharpness profile of the three lenses at their longest focal length and at f/2.8. Closing down the apertures increases sharpness to f/5.6-8, whereas after at f/11, all three begin to exhibit some diffraction and score below 70% acutance. Above: Nikon Z 24-70mm f2.8 S on a Nikon Z7 at 24mm, f2.8; 100% crops from the FF-corner at f2.8 (left), f4.0 (middle), f5.6 (right) The Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 24–70 F2.8 Asph., meanwhile, is by far the most similar to the Sigma 24–70mm F2.8 in specification, even if it is more than 2.5 times as expensive. Its size and filter threads are identical and its weight only 3% greater than that of the Sigma.

As a newer lens, we expected the Sony to dominate in terms of image sharpness, and we have to admit it is more consistent across the image at wider apertures. Nevertheless the older Sigma 24–70 Art holds its own in this regard. For L mount there’s only one alternative from Panasonic but in case Sigma manages in the future to adapt their new lens for Canon’s EOS R and Nikon’s Z system too I’ve included the native 24-70mm zoom lenses from both manufacturers. Most of these alternatives are from 2019: Aspherical lenses necessitate refined expertise in the design and manufacturing of advanced, high-performance lenses. The new Sigma Art goes down to 1:3.8 magnification at 70mm focal length which is the same as the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 Di III and a little better than the Sony FE 24-70mm f2.8 GM and Nikon Z 24-70mm f2.8 S at 1:4.2. The following images were shot at 1:4.1 magnification where the area of sharp focus is just 98 x 148mm. The crops shown below are from 0mm, 7mm, and 19mm off the center of the sensor respectively. The test revealed that field-curvature of the lens becomes stronger the closer you focus. So at closer shooting distances the “plane” of sharpest focus is in fact a “bowl” curving away from the lens. For the following crops I focused once on the center at f2.8 and did not change focus: Expect wide open corner light fall-off amounts to range from about 1.2 stops at 35mm up to nearly 3 stops at both extents of the zoom range.

Quality

Tamron offers the 28-75mm f2.8 Di III RXD from 2018 for about 730 EUR / 880 USD. It starts at 28mm which might not be wide enough for some purposes (see comparison below) but is almost 300g lighter and clearly cheaper than the Sigma. The lens earned a Recommended in my Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 review. It's hard to find much to complain about with the Sigma 24–70mm F2.8, but we did find one issue on the bokeh front. Personally speaking, I wish Leica gave this lens an aperture ring. It would give the lens a really unique feeling that no one else on the market has. Update May 2023 Above: Sony FE 24-70mm f2.8 GM at 24mm, f2.8; 100% crops from the FF-corner at f2.8 (left), f4.0 (middle), f5.6 (right)

PAST BYLINES: Gear Patrol, PC Mag, Geek.com, Digital Photo Pro, Resource Magazine, Yahoo! News, Yahoo! Finance, IGN, PDN, and others. Nikon has the Z 24-70mm f2.8 S for 1800 EUR / 2000 USD (after rebates). It got a Highly Recommended in my Nikon Z 24-70mm f2.8 S review. At 24mm focal length the Sigma is a little less sharp than the Nikon but a bit sharper than the Sony in the center. At 28mm focal length all four lenses look very similar in the APS-C image-circle with a slight edge for the Sigma and Tamron in center sharpness. The Nikon has the best FF-corner. But, you are probably not considering this lens if you only plan to use an f/4 max aperture because in that case, you are better off with the image stabilized This isn’t a critique of the town of Wetlzar — but more of a reality of the world’s infrastructure and how it affects the quality of a product. Perhaps Leica should consider moving repairs to Portugal — a place with far more young people trying to escape the world’s economic hardships. Sure, the product can be made in Germany. But if the repair center is located in Portugal, I’d be perfectly fine with that if it just worked. It’s a rather toxic viewpoint to require that it be fixed in Germany is the infrastructure isn’t necessarily there. After all, these repair and technical issues are the cause of why we made the update to this review in the first place.
