About this deal

An H pencil corresponds to a #4 pencil on the American grading system, which places it a few spots further up the hardness scale over a #2 pencil. While an H pencil will create lighter lines than the more common #2 pencil, it is possible to create lines that are moderately dark by using a lot of pressure. If you like to have a detailed sketch done before you do a finished drawing or painting, an H pencil can work very well for you. It’s still a hard graphite lead, but it’s softer and can be used to create darker lines than other hard pencils. An 8H lead is very hard, but not quite as hard as a 9H lead. What should you use an 8H lead for? You can use it for anything that you use a 9H lead for since the two are very similar in terms of hardness and the types of marks that they create on paper. The only real difference is that an 8H lead is slightly softer than a 9H lead, which means it will produce marginally darker lines and that it is somewhat more likely to smudge. In England, pencils continued to be made from whole sawn graphite. Henry Bessemer's first successful invention (1838) was a method of compressing graphite powder into solid graphite thus allowing the waste from sawing to be reused. The top sequence shows the old method that required pieces of graphite to be cut to size; the lower sequence is the new, current method using rods of graphite and clay.

In general, you can say with some certainty that smoother paper is ideal for precise and methodical drawings, while rougher paper is more suited to a looser and sketchier style. Read this for an overview of the common pencil types and brands: Best Drawing Pencils For Beginners: How to Choose (2023) All grades of Caran d’Ache Grafwood Pencils contain a small amount of tallow in the wax blend, so they are not suitable for vegan artists. Harder H grade pencils are perfect for light sketching, especially if you are drafting ideas. They allow you to create precise lines as their points are extremely hard and firm.

The most common pencil casing is thin wood, usually hexagonal in section but sometimes cylindrical or triangular, permanently bonded to the core. Casings may be of other materials, such as plastic or paper. To use the pencil, the casing must be carved or peeled off to expose the working end of the core as a sharp point. Mechanical pencils have more elaborate casings which are not bonded to the core; instead, they support separate, mobile pigment cores that can be extended or retracted (usually through the casing's tip) as needed. These casings can be reloaded with new cores (usually graphite) as the previous ones are exhausted. Once you get to the 7B range of pencils, you are getting into pencils that are quite soft, blend easily, and can make very dark values. 7B pencils should be used to render in areas of your drawing that are in deep shadow where very little light reaches.

Have you ever wondered what these little numbers at the end of your pencil mean? Yes, it can be confusing when you first try to decode the meaning of a 6B or 4H individually. Break it down and first try and understand the meaning behind each alphabet and what it indicates in itself. Another factor to consider is "graphite shine". Graphite is naturally shiny. However, this shine can be reducedif the graphite is applied using a layered approach. Lighter pencils may be used earlier in the process followed by darker pencils. Even and consistent pressure should be applied with each layer so that the tooth of the paper is not destroyed. (Flattening the tooth often increases the shine.) darker than the one before it, but lighter than the one after it. You’ll want to use harder pencils for the lighter values and softer pencils for the darker values. You won’t put anything in the first box because position #1 is for pure white on the value scale. Draw out 9 different squares. These squares can be drawn by hand and messy, or if you are a perfectionist, you can use a ruler and at-square to draw perfect squares. HB and F pencils both produce similar values, but they do so for different reasons. HB pencils have a small amount of clay mixed into the lead, making it hard while still allowing it to add dark values. An F pencil has less graphite, making it hard, and allowing it to create a full range of values. Both of these pencils are popular with artists, and they complement each other well when used together. What can you use a 2H pencil for? Take everything that was said about 3H pencils above, then apply it here. Really. 2H and 3H pencils are very similar, with the only noticeable difference being that a 3H is slightly harder. That means that it makes marginally lighter marks than a 2H pencil. But, for all practical purposes, they are interchangeable. Mechanical pencils use mechanical methods to push lead through a hole at the end. These can be divided into two groups: with propelling pencils an internal mechanism is employed to push the lead out from an internal compartment, while clutch pencils merely hold the lead in place (the lead is extended by releasing it and allowing some external force, usually gravity, to pull it out of the body). The erasers (sometimes replaced by a sharpener on pencils with larger lead sizes) are also removable (and thus replaceable), and usually cover a place to store replacement leads. Mechanical pencils are popular for their longevity and the fact that they may never need sharpening. Lead types are based on grade and size; with standard sizes being 2.00mm (0.079in), 1.40mm (0.055in), 1.00mm (0.039in), 0.70mm (0.028in), 0.50mm (0.020in), 0.35mm (0.014in), 0.25mm (0.0098in), 0.18mm (0.0071in), and 0.13mm (0.0051in) ( ISO 9175-1)—the 0.90mm (0.035in) size is available, but is not considered a standard ISO size. Ultimately, the type of pencils you need will depend on your drawing style and personal preference.
