About this deal

However, dd is 7, but a very advanced reader. From what you've described I won't be buying these books. Understand I can't shelter her from the world forever, but think the dustbin baby story is potentially very upsetting.

My daughter is 9 and we don't allow her to have Jacqueline Wilson books. I don't think it's appropriate for a primary school age child to be reading about divorce, alcoholism or children "dumped" in care homes.Try not to worry too much about it, but just answer any questions she might have as basically as possible to avoid her getting upset. Discussing the themes in them with him, in my opinion, has helped him become the empathic, non-judgemental person that he is today... and they also helped some of his schoolfriends deal with issues that were directly affecting them... "Suitcase Kid" and "The Illustrated Mum" in particular helped my son deal with his problems concerning his mother... The books revolve around a childrens care home and the stories of the children in that home. They do have dark stories, no one ends up in a care home without accumulating a dark story. None of this is hidden. That said, none of it is graphic! It's not going to mentally scar your child. It's a good series and I've yet to meet a kid that has taken anything negative from it, in fact it's taught a great many children that you shouldn't judge anothers circumstances because bad things could have happened. It's an introduction to the world that your child is very shortly going to be living in.

I used to love her books but I'm a bit old for them now. I honestly don't think they are that bad. If anything if children don't understand it'll prompt them to ask parents rather than find out off of other children. Jacqueline is one of the nation’s favourite authors, and her books are loved and cherished by young readers not only in the UK but all over the world. She has sold millions of books and in the UK alone the total now stands at over 35 million!

Wow.. These have changed since I was 8! I was also an advanced reader and was an unashamed book worm (still am at 25!), the books to me always felt grown up and I liked that about them, they dealt with issues some friends went through in a 'nice' way.. I honestly can't remember issues like this in the books though, and am unsure about how I feel about it now.. Overall her books are good at letting young children experience what can happen to others but I wouldn't worry about the effect it may have on her. Love lessons is one I found in my cupboard just before Xmas when I was having a clear out. That's about a 14 year old that starts an affair type thing with her teacher that she babysat for
