Roku says the bezel has been slimmed and rounded; it’s neater in appearance than the original, from what I can remember. It allows for a little more real estate for the on-screen images, and presents a less obtrusive design than before. Control is available via the remote control handset or the Roku mobile app. The remote control doesn’t feel all that expensive (hardly a surprise) but it’s not the ergonomic disaster it might have been. It’s quite sensibly laid out, and direct buttons for Netflix and Freeview Play are very welcome. They’re certainly more useful than the direct buttons for Rakuten TV or Spotify, anyhow. So you’ve got the Hisense’s picture settings just how you like them – in all honesty, the biggest single influence you can have is on colour temperature. Viewed from the head-on (which, let’s be honest, is how you’ll look at it for the vast majority of the time), the Hisense is anonymous in an entirely positive way. The top, left and right bezels are very slim and smooth, while the broader strip along the bottom (which carries both ‘Hisense’ and ‘Roku TV’ logos) is equally well integrated. The opening scene in the hut is as revealing in terms of shadow detail as we could hope. It’s worth adjusting the brightness slider in the picture settings until you strike the right balance. In terms of starting points, the 'Normal' setting gets you closest to the best results, but make sure ‘TV Brightness’ is set to max. AppNexus sets the anj cookie that contains data stating whether a cookie ID is synced with partners. Watching the battle sequence outside Maz’s tavern midway through Star Wars: The Force Awakens, gives an excellent sense of what this speaker system can manage. Given its limited resources, this TV copes pretty well. The sound effects of the laser blasts and the TIE fighters screaming past are crisp and detailed. The battle cries and dialogue of the rebels and troopers are clear and placed effectively in the soundscape. When the X-Wings come to the rescue and chase off the Empire, the rousing score still manages to excite. No two ways about it, having Roku TV running the show is quite the coup for Hisense. The smart TV interface here is clean and unequivocal, easy and logical to navigate, and extensive without being exhausting.However, Hisense seems to know where this TV’s strengths lie. It’s not trying to offer finesse, it’s aiming to land a punch. And it does so successfully. The picture is bright and colourful, and even sharper and richer than its apparently identical predecessor. Both the early scenes of Rey’s desert home on Jakku and the lush green forests of Maz’s home planet of Takodana are produced with enthralling colours and so much natural detail that it’s hard to find fault with the picture. Even watching BBC News in SD, the picture is remarkably sharp and stable for a panel this size, even if the colours are more simplistic. Picture noise is low, movement is generally (although not always) well controlled, and overall detail levels are pretty high. Textures are described well, and even quite intricate patterns are handled with confidence. Basically, if you give the Hisense the best stuff to work with, it won’t let you down. At 9.8kg, it’s slightly heavier and measures at 1116 x 648 x 82mm (without the stand) – so again, very similar. Feet are stationed out wide, and assembly means slotting them in and tightening the screws. Getting to the TV’s start menu takes minutes once the TV has been registered. Even when upscaling less information-heavy content, the Hisense keeps the good news coming. Full HD stuff is a little softer and a little less positive than native 4K content, naturally, but as far as colours, textures and contrasts are concerned the A7200GTUK keeps up the good work. You have to really step down in quality to some 4:3 sub-1080p content to expose the Hisense’s limitations where upscaling is concerned. The Roku app (for iOS and Android) is very usable too. It’s clear, logical and stable (the Holy Trinity for any control app, really), and it makes searching for content, casting from a mobile device or using some rudimentary voice control completely straightforward.Accessibility options cover language selection, subtitles, hard-of-hearing settings and audio description. There’s no zoom function (no, not that one) – the fonts used are with accessibility in mind – and Roku has told me it’s working with Digital UK to enable the Accessibility Guide on Freeview Channel 555.
The Roku TV smart platform is pretty close to flawless. It covers all the major streaming services as well as thousands of seriously niche ones. You want a channel dedicated to crossbow hunting? With it on, latency falls to an impressive 11.8ms – great for fast-twitch or racing games that require smooth inputs. Picture quality Having Roku TV as the front end of your smart TV interface is unarguably a good thing. It’s logical and straightforward where so many alternatives want to make a virtue of being complicated, and it makes getting to the content you want the work of a moment.
You’ll find 4K HDR content available on all the big players. Since last year’s model was launched, UHD support for Google Play has arrived as has the BT Sport app, which is good news for football fans. With some HDR-assisted content delivered by a 4K Blu-ray player, the Hisense really makes the most of its specification. Colours are natural and convincing, and they’re decently wide-ranging – certainly there’s plenty of variation in skin-tones to enjoy here.Once you have colour balance, contrast and brightness at a level you’re happy with, it’s time to let the Hisense do its thing. And for the majority of the time, ‘its thing’ is generally quite poised and never less than watchable. This is a 4K TV, right? So it seems obvious that it will look its best when served some native 4K content to display – and that holds true here. No matter if you feed the A7200G the good stuff from a 4K Blu-ray player or via Netflix, it is capable of delivering very watchable images indeed.
