They all allow you to embody powerful heroes, while laying tiles to chart your path forward – and they all imbue you with the daring spirit of adventure. The 5th level was rarely visited due to a combination of hard-to-access rooms and monsters that were difficult for an Elf, Hero, or Superhero to defeat and smaller treasures than the 6th level monsters that Wizards could kill. This allows the game to be played by all participants rather than having one in the game master role. The game focuses on the Civil war between the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire after the destruction of the Death Star. Either way, you’ll always be treated to succinct, atmospheric text and art that perfectly evokes the darker entries in the Fighting Fantasy series that here serve as inspiration.

Haunts activate later in the game, preventing any irritatingly unfair early-game upsets, and player Adventurers are given greater specialisations.At the start of the game, these would be randomized and placed face down to fill all the dungeon rooms, treasures being placed first, then monsters overtop. It also doesn’t hurt that there’s a ton of thematic, fairytale-style prose that weaves each scenario into an overarching narrative. The story is a bit light on details, but you really do feel like you are dungeon crawling in the Star Wars universe, it sets the scenes and paints the picture very well.

The kicker is that, to get more troops, you’ll need more cards – but, to add more cards to your deck, you’ll need to take more territory, and field the troops to hold them. Players play the game on a turn basis – taking time to explore rooms or carry out certain actions (like investigating a set of drawers for items etc). Better yet, many of these DnD board gamesare outright stellar, skirting the edges ofourall-time best board gameslist. A unique feature here is that you are mainly driven by an app, and you move through a haunted mansion instead of some of the other locales you see in these games. Jaws of the Lion takes place before Gloomhaven, where four characters take on the tide of evil at Gloomhaven.Although the Hero arguably had no advantages, given the weighted treasure requisites to win the game, the Hero packed the most punch for a character class requiring the least amount of treasure to win, being slightly tougher against most monsters than the Elf. Halfway through the game one player turns and is revealed as a traitor, and there are different scenarios for the game to determine if the heroes or the traitor wins. Marines work through ‘operations’ to achieve objectives (like restoring power to objects, venturing into hell etc) all while the invader fights to stop the marines in their track. Combat is dynamic and strategic, with elements of pushing your luck and managing your available resources to mitigate and enhance dice-based combat.
