About this deal

Many register plates feature small access hatches or doors. These are there to provide access to the chimney cavity so that a chimney sweep can still inspect and sweep your chimney etc. Whatever the shape or size of your project, or requirements of your log burner flue kit, give our friendly specialists a call on 0344 8006586 and they will be happy to go through the details of your project and help your compile a list of items you'll need.

A car originally registered with a prefix letter (which would have been between 1983 and 2001) may display: When selecting the size of your closure/register plate the most important thing is to figure out the size of the base of your chimney cavity; your register/closure plate will need to fully seal it up after all. Our simple register plate form makes it easy for you to tell us what size and type of plate you would like. If a 904 316 chimney liner is being fitted then a register plate is not required. A plate is still required (to prevent heat being wasted by travelling up into the chimney and also to prevent "old soot smells" into the room as a chimney warms from the heat of the liner) but this plate is called a closure plate which we will come to shortly. It is rare nowadays that chimney liners are not fitted (although stove flue pipes might be connected directly to pot lined chimneys) and register plates are rarely fitted nowadays.

Guide – for more information on selecting the correct flue liner for your chimney and stove, read our guide here . Get all your stove parts and accessories at Direct Stoves A register plate is used when your chimney does not have a chimney flue liner. In other words, if your stove is venting its smoke and combustibles directly into the chimney cavity, you’ll need to install a register plate. Therefore, a closure plate is more for aesthetic reasons – to seal up the base of the chimney cavity where the flue goes up into the chimney. Closure plates tend to be more common than register plates as more and more people choose to use a stove with a chimney flue liner these days. Many closure/register plates come with pre-built holes and adapters – so, simply buy one that has the correct sized hole for your stove pipe. Alternatively, you can buy closure/register plates without a hole; you just need to measure the diameter of your stove pipe and make the hole yourself. Chimney flue liners to go with closure plates

Closure plate instead of register plate

We strongly recommend that you do use a chimney flue liner with your stove. This is because chimney flue liners provide a number of benefits such as improving the efficiency of your stove, preventing chimney fires, preventing the build of creosote, and much more. This will obviously depend on where you obtain your liner, but our own Ultraflex flexible liner, manufactured by us in the UK, has the following minimum life expectancies: The hole for the flue connection comes accurately placed on the plate already and, within reason, can be anywhere on the plate which is especially important where your chimney is not central to your fireplace opening. This gives you a higher degree of freedom when deciding where to place your stove. Extra Large stove register plate - up to 1 and 1/3rd m² (comes with 6 clips, and a collar/sweeping trap).

Building Regulations dictate that the minimum flue diameter for stoves up to 20kW burning smokeless fuel should be a minimum 5inch / 125mm diameter. First off, let’s begin by looking at register plates. A register plate is a flat metal sheet that closes off the base of a chimney (it looks a bit like a ceiling above the main fireplace). It’s put in place when you are installing a stove within an existing fireplace. Should you be intending to use your stove with a chimney flue liner, then you do not need to use a closure plate, however many people choose to do so as a closure plate will prevent soot and other detritus from falling into your room, will prevent heat from escaping up the chimney, and it generally looks neater and tidier. What size register or closure plate do you need? It is important to let us know if your register plate is for a lined chimney (in which case we add the liner clamp) or for an unlined chimney (in which case we add a sweeping hatch). Custom made register plates for unlined chimneys come with a generous access hatch to allow sweeping. What is the maximum output in kW of your "5kW" wood burning stove? The majority of manufacturers just specify the “nominal output” and this figure means very little in real life. The nominal is a figure the manufacturer chooses to sell the stove at - the stove is capable of reaching at least this output with one fuel load. Nominal means "capable of". But it is not the maximum. In the image above the register plate is for a large fireplace recess. There is a hole in the middle for the flue pipe and two hatches either side for accessing above the plate to retrieve soot. In smaller fireplaces there may be little room for these hatches and this causes difficulty. It is usually the wisest choice to fit a chimney liner and avoid the need for a closure plate. Instead you can fit a more simple "closure plate" (see lower down in this article). A closure plate does not have to be metal and does not have to have access hatches.
