About this deal

I’m not sure where the notion of adding caramel colouring came in, but these days a lot of brands claiming to be ‘navy style’ tend to heavily colour their Rums. During the early 20th century all the stills were merged and all ended up in the hands of DDL – Demerara Distillers Limited.

A deal was struck with the colony: all laws and customs could remain, and the citizens were equal to British subjects. Its distinct taste comes from the sugarcane used to make it combined with the aging process in oak barrels. proof rums from Guyana are an entirely different animal than that kerosene-like Bacardi 151 you had in college. by volume of Harmless Coloring/Flavoring/Blending Materials (HCFBM), which must be all-natural or not more than 0. When it comes to navy Rums, the colour is irrelevant - a proper navy Rum should be high proof (perhaps even Overproof) and a blend of different marques of Rum.Dante actually wrote of the 10th Level of Hell in his Divine Comedy* – other levels might have been for more commonplace sins such as Lust or Gluttony, but the 10th level was for all marketing people who refer to their Rum as ‘Black’. This long aging process creates a rich flavor profile, making it an ideal ingredient for cocktails and other drinks. Custom bottles are expensive, especially in small quantities for new bottlers, so it is almost always a given that the producer spent more on the bottle than the product in the bottle.

The Duppy Share is named after the dark duppy spirits that would, as legend has it, swoop between Caribbean islands stealing the best share of the rum. This rum did not "age out the first run molasses characteristics", it actually perfectly showcases those characteristics without hiding them behind a wall of added sugar. This is a rum a lot of our readers were raving about so we had to get it in and weren't disappointed.

No less a luminary than Beachbum Berry has said that Ed Hamilton's Guyana 86 proof is "One of only 6 rums that a Tiki enthusiast will ever need. English-speaking Guyana has been a sugar producing country since the 17th century, and was the original rum supplied to the British Navy. Not forgetting the type of wood used in its construction (French vs American Oak, or even Amburana for example).

This is something we learned while on a rum tasting session with Black Tot, one of the rums in our best rum guide. The unique flavor profile of Demerara rum is the result of its aging process in oak barrels and the addition of natural ingredients such as sugarcane juice and molasses. I would like to clarify something a prior reviewer posted - you should NEVER expect ANY sweetness from ANY rum, only if sugar is added post-distillation will a rum be sweet. The name "Demerara" comes from a variant of the Arawak word "Immenary" or "Dumaruni", which means "river of the letter wood" (wood of Brosimum guianense tree). A newcomer to the rum scene, debuting in 2018, Black-owned Ten To One has quickly put far older brands on notice by scooping up numerous awards, including the Platinum Medal for Best Rum at the 2022 LA Spirits Awards. Today, Demerara Distillers Limited operates the last remaining distillery in Guyana at Plantation Diamond on the East Bank of the Demerara River, after having consolidated all the old original stills and marques which make Demerara Rum so distinctive.
