About this deal

I love the Chemex, and it’s one of my favorite coffee brewers. The first cup of coffee I brewed with the Chemex was with a circle filter, and it looks like this:

Chemex themselves recommend one heaping tablespoon for 5 ounces of coffee, which means 8 heaping tablespoons or 4 heaping coffee scoops per 40 ounces of water. At the end of the day, I actually preferred 3coffee scoops with a full kettle of water. Remember though, I’m a coffee novice who doesn’t like my coffee overly strong. Look, this is a very small annoyance—it’s only slightly more of a faff than paper filters, takes just one additional step, but for some reason it bugs me. It just adds to all the extra dishes I’m having to do at the moment. But what are the differences between a circle and a square Chemex filter? Let’s find out: Let’s talk about the circle Chemex filter Rinse the coffee filter with plenty of hot water to help “seal” it against the glass and remove the paper taste — it also preheats your Chemex. Discard this rinse water (magically, you don’t actually need to take out the filter to pour out your water) and set up your brewer on a kitchen scale. The Chemex is a beautiful and functional coffee maker that you can use to make your favorite cup of joe. For regular use: After rinsing, store it in a glass filled with water in the fridge to prevent mildew and foul smells.

The Chemex carafe is a beautiful serving vessel, so bring it over to the table for a nice centerpiece, or just pour your coffee into mugs and serve right away. After enjoying your coffee, the next step is cleaning your coffee maker. Simply dump the drained filter in the trash and rinse the Chemex with any hot water remaining in your kettle. Experimentation is key to finding the perfect fit for your home brewing needs. Considerfactors such as taste preferences, environmental impact, and cost considerationswhen selecting. Step Two:Grind your coffee with a burr grinderand determine how much coffee you’ll use based on how many cups of coffee you’re making. For a full container (on the eight cup model), try starting with 4 coffee scoopsand adjust as necessary. So today I wanted to share with youeverything I’ve learned about brewing coffee with my Chemex Coffee Maker. And let you know that you too can take the easy brewing route and still havea darn goodcup of coffee! What is a Chemex? The result? Deliciously smooth and balanced coffee, every time. Well, sort of… as long as you get your Chemex brewing technique down, your scale is precise, you know the magic ratio and the proper water temperatures. It’s essential to buy the right filter, so you get the best extraction possible, resulting in better-tasting coffee.

If you don’t want to use disposable paper coffee filters, you can use metal or cloth filters with your Chemex. Metal Chemex FiltersI’ve always used paper filters, just as you have probably always used paper filters. As a barista, the act of grabbing a new filter, unfolding it, and placing it in the brewer was second nature. They’re just… what we use. Only very small grind adjustments are needed when setting up—once again a slightly finer grind when compared to the paper filter is a good place to start—and I’ve found the brews to be forgiving of experiments/mistakes. Cleaning & Maintenance But why are there so many Chemex filter types? And how are they different? I now know what I didn’t years ago, and I want to help you. The cloth filter in the V60 is actually quite similar to its paper peer: a reliably nuanced brew with consistent depth and body. Now that you know that these Chemex filters are made the same way, and your coffee will taste the same, you might wonder which to buy and why.

The Chemex brewing system is a simple, elegant way to make coffee at home. So simple, in fact, that all you need to use is your Chemex brewer and good quality beans. A nice benefit of the alternative filters is that many have the versatility to be used with other drippers as well. Some coffee filters are a great option if you also have a Hario V60 or other coffee maker with a cone filter. Why Filter Material MattersIf you have residue on the bottom or feel you need a deeper clean, fill your Chemex halfway full with ice and a quarter full with water. Add a few tablespoons of salt and a couple drops of liquid soap. Swirl and slosh this around until it’s all bubbly, then pour it out and rinse. Cost and budgetalso need to factor into your decision-making process since some types of filters can be more expensive than others.
