About this deal

I really enjoyed The Prince and the Dressmaker, especially seeing how France and Sebastian’s relationship grew. I loved how Frances was so supportive of Sebastian’s self-expression, encouraging him to do what made him feel right. Wang also portrayed the discrimination and ostracism that arose when Sebastian’s secret was discovered very well, which I felt was important as not everyone accepts this way of life. Sebastian’s secret weapon is his brilliant dressmaker, Frances―his best friend and one of only two people who know the truth: sometimes this boy wears dresses. But Frances dreams of greatness, and being someone’s secret weapon means being a secret. Forever. How long can Frances defer her dreams to protect her friend? How can someone like me marry a princess? What happens if she discovers who I really am? How could I do that to someone's daughter? How could I do that to my parents?" pg. 73 I also thought Sebastian’s relationship growth with Frances was so sweet. They helped each other grow and express themselves creatively. They supported each other and loved each other even through the rough patches. They’re young, they’re kids, and kids make mistakes. However, Wang portrayed them with great maturity and strength through every hardship they faced. Overall Thoughts – And here's another link for you, of which I was reminded: The deep friendship of Audrey Hepburn and designer Hubert de Givenchy (he said it was "like a marriage"), which itself inspired several books. A picture book I read and liked depicts a friendship between a man with taste and style, a fashion designer, and a girl just too lovely not to dress in the latest fashion, a match made in heaven:

Costume Porn: There is no denying there are many beautiful clothes pictured. Many of which are designed by Frances in-universe. I was so excited to read this graphic novel, and it did not disappoint in the slightest. This is honestly my favorite graphic novel I have read all year—probably in the last two years, even—and I know it is one I would reread again and again in the future. The artwork is beautiful, the story is so sweet, and I just loved every single bit of it from start to finish. However, this isn’t the sort of fairy tale where the girl gives up her dream for the handsome prince. Frances isn’t about to stay hidden away and forfeit credit for her work no matter how much she cares for her friend. It is clear that she has come into her own as a designer as much as Sebastian has embraced who he is as a “prince who wears dresses.” Small Role, Big Impact: Lady Sophia, the teenage girl who messes up her ballgown and gets a new one at the last minute, alerts Prince Sebastian to Frances's talent.

Ambiguous Time Period: There's no mention of what year or era the story takes place. However, the fact that it takes place in Paris, France and the Eiffel Tower is nowhere in sight it's safe to assume that it takes before 1887 at least. Sebastian’s secret weapon (and best friend) is the brilliant dressmaker Frances—one of only two people who know the truth: sometimes this boy wears dresses. But Frances dreams of greatness, and being someone’s secret weapon means being a secret. Forever. How long can Frances defer her dreams to protect a friend? Jen Wang weaves an exuberantly romantic tale of identity, young love, art, and family. A fairy tale for any age, The Prince and the Dressmaker will steal your heart. The last two weeks I haven’t posted much as I was in major need of a break. I utterly love talking about books and creating content, but sometimes it can get really overwhelming.

Wang wrote the character of Sebastian/Crystallia as "someone who identifies with different modes of gender expression and is comfortable alternating between both masculine and feminine", noting that she might call the character genderqueer but that other interpretations of the character's relationship to their gender presented by readers were also valid. [1] Wang originally wrote both Frances and Sebastian as older characters, but adapted the characters to be teenagers which she realized heightened the stakes of the characters' realizations about themselves but otherwise fundamentally changed very little about the story. [1] [2] Production [ edit ]I heard this audio and could not resist using it to feature what I dub, The Bread Skirt. This is one of the cute skirts my mom and I made over the summer, and I have to say, it’s pretty darn good for some adventuring! In Chapter Ten, after Sebastian has run away, Frances tells the King, “The thing that ruined Sebastian was how afraid he was of what you’d think of him.” Make a list of five things young people are afraid others will think of them along with a suggestion for overcoming the fear.
