About this deal

I'm a bit behind the times watching the TV series 'Luther' as only watched it in the last couple of weeks. Through to characters that didn't absolutely need to be here, but we like the continuity: Ian Reed, the dogged side-kick, who is injured throughout a lot of this story, but Cross begins to foreshadow some of the storyline that Reed presents once the TV serial kicks off. In full disclosure, I haven't watch the TV series "Luther" yet, although it's been on my to-watch list for quite a while. I think perhaps the nature of the crimes disturbed me so much, as I also found Red Dragon by Thomas Harris, to be compelling yet very uncomfortable reading too, and the crimes were somewhat similar. The Luther book tells the tale of the case of child killer Henry Madsen who was a major bad guy in the TV series. What is particularly worthwhile about this book is the character of DCI John Luther, a moody, difficult, man with a volatile personality and absolute tunnel vision when it comes to getting the bad guy. Back in February, a teaser confirming a third run with a sketchy graphic of Elba looking intense was enough to send fans into a frenzy. This book is nerve-shreddingly gritty and unbelievably fast-paced, and the crimes are sinister and complex.

My understanding of the tv series is that Luther pushes the boundaries and is a dark character and given this book is written after the tv series to try and explain (prologue) the Luther character I think the author has gone overboard in the violence and nature of the crime Luther is investigating which detracts from the story (and I have read a lot of crime novels). I realise later on that I’ve missed a literary joke such is my keenness to move beyond to the bits that are perhaps more mundane, such as how Luther’s marriage is on the rocks. His partner and best friend, Ian Reed, is on the same page, but other colleagues frown when he disregards policy. Mullet explains and analyses Luther’s background, the development of his Reformation theology in the 95 Theses, the Diet of Worms and the creation of Lutheranism.I would suggest you add books by Harry Bingham’s series (UK), AA Dhand (UK), and Stacy Green (USA — the books featuring Cage Foster ie prequel, new series and Crossroads Trilogy).

Ned Dennehy (Tyrannosaur, Parade's End) joins the cast as a recently un-retired officer charged with weeding out corruption in the force, assisted by Luther's one-time colleague and now foe, Erin Gray. Luther claims repentance for his past deeds, but was it his sins that condemned the Chapter to its secretive fate, or should warnings from history have been more closely heeded? Luther is a big man with a big walk,” is Cross’s understated way of describing this very complex and conflicted London detective of the Serious Crime Unit. John Luther might not be corrupt, but his violent outbursts and willingness to do anything to put the villains behind bars hasn’t won him universal support. He is an angry man who is compelled to bring some of the evilest, demented killers to his type of justice (or vengeance), often going outside the law. Especially as, I believe, this has been a reverse adaptation with the TV series coming before the book. I have rarely felt such contempt and or disgust for characters and their actions as told in this book, nor have I ever winced at story being told. This is a novel by Neil Cross that is a prequel to his famed BBC TV crime series LUTHER starring the terrific actor and top bloke Idris Elba.
