However, I was definitely surprised by how realistic these two options felt compared to an acoustic piano. With that said, the GHS system of Yamaha is hard to beat out when it comes to hammer action, which is why the Yamaha P-45 won out over the Donner DEP-20. The key texture of both of these pianos honestly leaves a lot to be desired. Since they are on the more affordable side of the spectrum this is forgivable. However, it would have been very nice if the pianos featured textured keys to mimic the ebony and ivory keys of an acoustic piano. This isn’t the case. Instead, both of the pianos feature glossy plastic keys, which don’t make too much of a difference, but any experienced pianist will be able to tell that the keys are made out of plastic. This could have been fixed with a simple coating on the keys, but that is sadly missing on both models. Tone Both of these pianos have a couple of different playing modes that have different benefits. The most notable of these modes is lesson mode. With this mode, you can divide the piano into two different zones with the same voice and tuning. This is a great feature for piano lessons, as the teacher can demonstrate a bunch of different music techniques the exact same way you should play it without having to use the student’s side of the piano. This feature also comes in handy if you’re playing piano duets, as you won’t need two separate pianos if you activate this mode.

The piano features 128-note polyphony, and there is no chance of losing voice while using the piano. The piano also has 200 rhythms and 238 premium tones and its full weighted hammer keys offer a very sensitive response to the playing style. The Donner DEP-20 arguably has more variety than the Yamaha P-45 with over 238 different voices. Now, this may make it seem like the Donner DEP-20 is the superior option when it comes to tone. However, I was fairly let down while going through the different sounds on this instrument. While the piano and a couple of other voices were definitely top-quality, there were more than a handful that weren’t up to par. So, while you get more voices, they aren’t as high-quality as the Yamaha P-45, which is very important to consider when buying a digital piano. Piano Features The Alesis Recital Pro features very standard samples. While they are far from bad, they aren’t exactly the best, even in its price range. The samples on the Recital Pro don’t exactly sound digital, but it’s fairly evident to the trained ear that the sounds aren’t coming from an acoustic piano. Both of these pianos use the Yamaha AWM sampling method. This is one of the best ways to produce top quality voices through the standard sampling method. Instead of using low-quality samples with artificial and digital decay, both of the pianos use the best samples out there with completely natural decay. While this takes up more memory, both brands chose to give their pianos more storage capabilities so that they can play higher quality samples.
Since these pianos are designed to help beginners get used to playing a real piano, they also have graded hammer action. That way, playing these pianos will feel similar to pressing the keys on an acoustic piano, which is one of the most important features of any beginner’s piano. While both of the pianos have fully-weighted keys, the Donner DEP-20 simply had a more realistic feel. Additionally, the Donner DEP-20 has more accurate touch sensitivity for better playability. With that said, the key texture of both models was significant letdowns. The polyphony limit of the Donner DEP-20 is 128. This is a high enough limit to offer full expressivity opportunities. If you’re just beginning then there’s going to be a while until you even come near to playing complex enough musical pieces to get near to that upper limit. As I have pointed out along the sections of he review, there are many characteristics that impressed me in a big way. The general impression is definitely a positive one. As much the sound as the keyboard of the digital piano surpass its price range. The speakers are very good quality offering enough clarity to please even the more sensitive ears, their power filling any living room setting without amplification. One of the major inconveniences with some speaker systems is the tendency to lose in quality as you turn up the volume. I was, again, pleasantly surprised not to discover anything like it with the speakers of the Donner DEP-20.
It’s not too heavy to move around the house when needed, but it’s rather big and clumsy. It comes with five feet on the bottom, one of which is oddly positioned in the middle of the underside.
There was almost no competition when it came to comparing the sound library of these two models. The Alesis Recital Pro comes with 12 different voices. This is about standard for a digital piano, and since the voices are good quality, beginners have just about all the sounds they need to start learning the instrument.
They both feature 88-key keyboards with progressive hammer action, offer a realistic feel, and both come with decent speakers for practicing and jamming with other musicians. Between the two, the Yamaha P71 is the clear choice as you’ll be paying for some great features that are unique to the Yamaha P71. Both of these pianos use samples to generate tones. That means that the brands recorded top-quality sounds from real instruments such as pianos, strings, and even bass tones. And whenever you press down on a key, you trigger one of these samples, which produces the sound. Although, I should start with the major positive, which is that you get 88 hammer-action keys, and that’s not always the case with cheap keyboard pianos. So, whatever the quality, hammer-action keys are a huge selling point for the DEP-20. The Donner DEP-20 also has this feature, but it also has an additional chorus effect. As a beginner, you probably won’t use this effect too often. However, if you combine this effect with an electric piano voice or even a piano voice, you get a really unique sound that’s instantly recognizable. Yamaha P45 vs Donner DEP 20: The Similarities This is no lightweight, and it's not small - Get a good stand for it. I have a Z style stand that works great with it.Both of these pianos have full 88-key keyboards with a variation of progressive hammer action. When testing these pianos out, I found that there was barely a difference when it comes to the feel and playability.
