Brought to life with Roland’s ACB (Analog Circuit Behavior) technology, the CR-78 model offers every sound and nearly all preset patterns from the original analog hardware. It also includes new patterns and advanced sound design capabilities made possible with the modern ACB approach. The machine uses a technology from Roland called Analog Circuit Behavior. This technology gives you impressive control over the sounds, offering you sound controls such as tuning and decay on each channel. The ACB instruments are pretty great, watch some videos and decide with your own ears. I reach for them by default.

Drive is the least extreme of all the choices, and comes with a two-band EQ that is both pre- and post-gain. This effect works well on nearly all of the instruments. Crusher, as you’d expect is really a bitcrusher and has a built-in filter. This one works great on hi-hats and other high frequency material. Next, Saturator is slightly less extreme than the Drive effect and has even more control. The sounds are what made the Roland TR machines so famous. It’s no overstatement to say that the music industry changed forever when the TR-808 was released in 1980. Those sounds have been used in thousands of albums and are still being used 40 years later. Velocity programming can be done in a couple of ways, the easiest being holding the Shift button and stepping through different velocities per beat, with brightness indicating the level. You can also record machine-gun-style Sub Steps – kind of programming between beats – so you are not limited by the step values.Pro Tip:For more unusual results, try using one of the two gating modes with an eighth- or sixteenth-note hi-hat. This will chop the external input based on the pattern. Both the auxiliaries feature multiple effect types, and the master effect slot features 19 options, again featuring a host of filter and EQ types, multiple flavours of distortion, compression, two transient shapers, as well as a phaser and flanger. Some of the original TR machines are still playable today, and Roland has kept in line with the durability standards. Overall, the build quality of the TR-8S is excellent, and it will last a very long time if cared for properly. If you’re happy to spend a bit more money, the Roland MC-707 Groovebox is another good drum machine. However, it doesn’t encapsulate the classic feel of a Roland TR drum machine like the TR-8S does.

Another thing is that there isn’t a song mode. Most modern-day drum machines have a mode where making songs with verses and choruses is quite easy. This feature hasn’t been added to the TR-8S, so you’ll have to manually change patterns if you’re changing things up in a song. To keep the TR-8S's settings unchanged and return only Kits or Patterns to their factory defaults, select "KIT" or "PTN." Press the [ UTILITY ] button and use the cursor buttons to select "Factory Reset," then press [ ENTER ]. The included sounds are great and completely tweakable. Haven't tried the v2.0 included FM-synth yet, I'm still on v1.13. Awesome that you can upload samples. Some of the effects could do with less parameters (the compressor and drive f.i.) but I guess all those tweakable frequency's etc. are necessary for live usage? The Rate parameter works a bit like a fine-tuning control, with negative amounts inverting the sample direction. In practice, it helps to think of this as a continuously variable sample-reverse tool. Auto-Fill has its own on/off button, with an 808-style time interval dial to select how frequently the fill is played. By default the manual fill button works like the 808: tapping it towards the beginning of a measure will queue up a full bar fill, while pressing towards the end of the measure triggers an instant partial fill. However, one of the first things I did was dive into the Utility settings and switch the manual fill button to Momentary mode, where fills can be dropped in and out at any time while you hold the button. The TR-8S V2.0 upgrade also adds in 4 new great sounding effects: Saturator, Ring Modulator, Spread and Frequency Shift for more sonic variation. Each sound still has its own fader, although the travel is a little shorter here and, where each of the TR-8S’s channels has its own rotaries for tuning, decay and an assignable Ctrl parameter, here all six instruments share a single trio of rotaries. With Motion and Coarse control you can even program simple melodies using the included synth and bass patches!
