About this deal

Yes, you can place the SSCS5 speakers on bookshelves or speaker stands, whichever suits your room layout and acoustic preferences. Conclusion: Sony SSCS5 [2023 Review] The speakers also have a small footprint, measuring 7.125 x 13.25 x 8.75 inches. They are narrow and slim but a little tall due to the three-way design. Compared to a two-way speaker, the SS-CS5 may take up a little more vertical space. However, it is still relatively compact. Bear in mind that this is a wired speaker, meaning that it doesn’t come with built-in Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connectivity options. Sound 5.0 If you want to buy a speaker and you are tight on the budget, the Polk is the right way to go. They won’t provide you with the best sound quality ever, but it will be enough for your immersive movie experience and is certainly an upgrade on the standard tv speakers. Size Sony SSCS5 The Sony SSCS5 Bookshelf Speakers are an excellent option for those looking for an affordable and well-rounded audio solution. They’re ideal whether you’re a casual listener or those just starting to build your home audio setup.

The overall size of these speakers is not big either so you won’t have to place it’s a larger shelf just to fit them in. Sony has also included air-core inductors in the tweeter of this speaker along with a silicone steel plate within the woofer for better support and sound reproduction. Polk T15 After going through the analysis, we would say Sony SSCS5 should be preferred over Polk T15 because of its better sound quality. It can handle low to midrange sounds very well and bass handling is far better than Polk T15. Ultimately, the Sony SS-CS5 makes high-quality listening experiences accessible to anyone, which is why so many music lovers have fallen in love with it over the years. Compared to other bookshelf speakers

Bookshelf speakers are versatile in function and serve multiple purposes. Sony is without a doubt the high-end brand here while Polk is a suitable budget entry. But by no means does Polk falls short of consumer expectations in terms of performance. Our dedicated team of experts has tried and tested both models inside out to provide you with an unbiased review of each. Sony-SSCS5 Review The Sony SSCS5 is a speaker that has tapered faceplate edges. This way, the cabinet cannot pollute the overall sound reproduction of the speaker with unwanted noise. Of course, with the noise reduced, the speaker sound stays clear and powerful. Additionally, the strong cabinet design of these speakers ensures resonant acoustics. There is no unwanted vibration and the overall looks blend with most modern interiors as well.

With a high-frequency response up to 50 kHz, music feels vibrant and energizing, and the transparent sound is further enhanced by the film condensers and woofer’s silicon steel plate, which improve the soundstage and mitigate resonances. Totally agree with @infinitesymphony about their sound signature. Their consumer speakers were never of my taste. Bud I had not listened to the High End series. The speakers also have a fairly solid construction in terms of durability and stability. The wooden cabinets help reduce unwanted vibrations, allowing for clear and distortion-free audio output. Features and specifications The main feature that sets the SS-CS5 apart from other speakers in the same price range is the extra driver in each speaker. These are three-way speakers instead of two-way speakers. The woofer is positioned at the bottom with the super tweeter at the top and the standard tweeter in the middle. The SS-CS5's response looks pretty smooth, especially for the price range. On-axis, it's +/-3.4 dB from 70 hertz to 20 kHz, which is an extremely good result for a speaker at this price. There's a slight boost around 1.1 kHz, which may make voices stand out a bit better. Plus, there's a slight downward tilt in the tonal balance, which means the speaker is unlikely to sound bright or trebly or thin. Averaged on/off-axis response is close to the on-axis response, which is good. Furthermore, you won’t find any magnets here. But the overall look of these speakers is nice and they do have an expensive look to them at first glance. Maybe if it just had some little more life in the bass department you could hace lived with the uneven frequency response. However, these speakers are not designed to win sound quality awards especially if you compare them with speakers at a higher price range. At this price range, you shouldn’t expect sound quality and performance that matches the likes of a Klipsch RP-500SA.

You can conveniently take the grill out if you want and they also support DTS and Dolby. The dynamic balance technology these speakers come with ensures they work well with your home theatre. Other Things to Consider Price Sony SSCS5 Apart from the super tweeter, the speakers also feature a 1-inch tweeter that can handle low to midrange sounds aptly. With a 5.25-inch woofer, these speakers can certainly take care of the bass extremely well too. All of the components on the SSCS5 Sony are of great quality. The tweeter, for starters, has air corn inductors. The woofer, on the other hand, has a silicone steel plate. The speaker furthermore features film condensers that are durable and highly-effective. Overall, the SSCS5 Sony will not fail you in terms of the way its components work and their lifespan. The performance that the Sony SSCS5 has to offer to you is nothing but amazing. This bookshelf speaker works great with other stereo speakers and it does a good job when so. The sound that it produces will expand through the entire room, so you’ll feel like you’re at a concert or in the movie you’re watching. First, find something that will fit the hex screws that hold the woofer and tweeter baffle in place. Surprisingly, none of my allen wrenches fit, but I had a hex bit that did (pictured below). Remove all the screws that hold the woofer in place. While their sound quality is impressive for their size, they may not give you the same level of detail and clarity as the Sony SSCS5 speakers. These speakers are an excellent choice for those looking for a compact, wireless audio solution without needing additional components. But if you prioritize sound quality and are willing to invest in an external amplifier, the Sony SSCS5 will probably be the better option. Manufacturer’s warranty Polk is a brand that doesn’t fall in the top or top-mid tier of the market. If someone is buying Polk it is because they usually are looking for a budget-friendly option. Edifier also has its own mix of budget-friendly options such as the R1700BT or the R1850DB. While the bass response may not be as deep or powerful as some other models, it’s still adequate if you just want speakers for casual listening or for if you don’t prioritize bass-heavy audio. The bass reflex system helps enhance the low-frequency performance. Setup and integration The above chart shows the frequency response of the SS-CS5 on-axis (blue) and the average of responses at 0, ±10, ±20, and ±30 degrees horizontally (green). Generally speaking, the flatter and more horizontal these lines look, the better the speaker sounds.

Even though the Sony SS-CS5 is a great bookshelf speaker, there’s one thing about it that is not so spectacular. We already mentioned in this Sony SSCS5 Review that the speaker has a great bass reproduction and that is true. The only thing is that the speaker could really use a nice subwoofer to help it be more precise when it comes to the lowest of frequencies. It’s not like this is a big deal—the speaker functions great without a subwoofer too. However, if you want to get an even more accurate sound, you should consider buying a subwoofer. Sony SSCS5 Review Conclusion For optimal sound quality, placement is key—try positioning the speakers at ear level and slightly angled towards the listening area. This versatile speaker is highly compatible with most amplifiers or receivers, whether you have an old audio system or modern gear like the Denon AVR-S570BT or a Marantz PM8006. In general, with an input power of up to 100 W, you won’t need a monstrous amp to make them work. The Sony SSCS5 speakers have an impedance of 6 ohms and a sensitivity of 87 dB, making them suitable for pairing with a variety of amplifiers or receivers. The impedance indicates the electrical resistance of the speakers, while the sensitivity represents how efficiently they can convert the electrical signal into sound. Bass reflex system The overall build quality of these speakers isn’t anything to write home about, and that is why this Sony product doesn’t come with a hefty price tag. The grills attached to the speakers here are pretty old-school in design featuring grommets. But they’ll cost you quite a bit more than the Sony SSCS5. So you’re likely better off going with the Sony speakers if you’ve got a narrow budget to work with. Polk Monitor T15 Bookshelf Speakers However, as a budget-friendly speaker, it comes with some caveats, and there are other alternatives within the same price range that offer similar performance. Still, I love them! So here’s my review of the Sony SS-CS5 and why you should get a pair too. About the author
