As a teenager, Besson envisioned the world of The Fifth Element in an attempt to alleviate boredom. He began writing the script when he was 16, originally envisioning the story as a novel; [15] though the film was not released in cinemas until he was 38. [16] The original story was set in the year 2300 and was about a "nobody" named Zaltman Bleros (later renamed Korben Dallas) who wins a trip to the Club Med resort on the planet Fhloston Paradise in the Angel constellation. There, he meets Leeloo, a "sand-girl" who has the "beauty of youth" despite being over 2,000 years old. [17]

Clearly Jovovich’s Fifth Element bandage costume idea was a great one as the design remains one of the most-remembered aspects of Besson’s very busy and imaginative movie. And Jovovich indeed appreciates the impact Leeloo’s look continues to have on people nearly 30 years after the film’s release. “ It's been amazing to see how much Leeloo has affected style, and how much fun people have with her character and embodying her spirit,” Jovovich said to Vogue. The whole film captures the essence of what and who is Jean Paul Gaultier, from the colourful subversive silhouettes to the gender-neutral looks and even the costumes of Vito Cornelius (the priest that helps Leeloo save the world) and the soldiers who are more based on more traditional sci-fi films, such as Star Wars.

In 1997, the science-fiction film The Fifth Element by Luc Besson was released—and the character Leeloo, played by 19-year-old Milla Jovovich, was born. The flame-tressed humanoid is tasked with saving the planet and has quite the wardrobe—all designed by Jean Paul Gaultier—to go along with it. The most famous piece by far is a barely there white bandage bodysuit, which has inspired Halloween costumes for decades. Hanson, Matt (2005). Leeloo is portrayed by Ukrainian-born American actress, model and musician, Milla Jovovich. She and director of The Fifth Element, Luc Besson, were married in 1997, but divorced in 1999. She would later become famous for her role as Alice in the film series for Resident Evil, based on the Capcom games of the same name, directed by her now-husband, Paul W. S. Anderson.

Enhanced Learning: Leeloo was able to learn English and 5,000 years of human history in just a few days. While her English was still less than fluent throughout much of the film, it appears that exposure to lots of humans on board the ship to Fhloston Paradise allowed her to learn English rapidly through immersion. At the beginning of the film, she is unable to speak English, using only what Cornelius describes as "the Divine language, the language spoken before time was time." She is able to speak short, broken sentences of English while on board the plane to Fhloston while conversing with Korben. By the end of the movie, she is expressing herself almost fluently in English. Being that a few cells were still viable in the arm, the lead scientist begins reconstructing the being using the isolated DNA and a complex machine that puts the being together part by part, beginning with the skeleton, followed by the muscles and organs, and finally exposing the body to slightly greasy solar atoms (ultraviolet radiation), forcing the body to take measures to protect itself from UV damage by growing skin and hair. The entire process is explained by the lead scientist to a skeptical General Munro, who is less than enthusiastic about the being's revival. He informs the scientist that he hopes the the being is "friendly", stating his intent to destroy the being with a card-activated destruction system inside the machine if he is not. The designs of buildings in New York were derived from both metabolist-inspired masses of modular apartments from the 1960s and the futuristic designs of architect Antonio Sant'Elia in the 1910s. [44] Besson demanded that most of the action shots take place in broad daylight, as he was reportedly tired of the dark spaceship corridors and dimly lit planets common in science-fiction films, and wanted a brighter, "cheerfully crazy" look as opposed to a gloomy, realistic one.
