About this deal

Overall, The Nest is better than it should be though still pretty bad. Even I began to tire after a phonebook of characters meet their brutal demise. The remaining cast struggle to obtain significance until the final 20% of the book, which is admittedly excellent. The scientific explanations and epic showdown are well worth the slog through the more boring passages. It's like Douglas said to himself: Now that I've completed the obligatory slaughter, I can actually write a novel! Something nasty has just moved up the food chain....and the human inhabitants are next on the menu. Guest DJs return Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings throughout the winter at The Nest and Madera. Besides Chemistry, Biology has been the one course that fascinates me a LOT. However, with the inherent disgust for crawly insects, human and animal gross anatomy, and basically anything Biologists deal with, except plants, I bravely chose Chemistry over it. That's the very reason why I enjoyed this book so much! Yes, it's gross, it's freaky, it's creepy, but I love it!

I looked around at celebrity book clubs, and you know what I saw? Oprah. Reese Witherspoon. Hermione Watson. And I thought, "Why not me?"

There are some other elements of The Nest that positively distinguish it from the swarm. Douglas does a particularly good job of showing the reader how his characters perceive each other. Changes in character perspective frequently re-introduce known characters or re-assess situations. In addition to usefully adding dimension to the characters, this strategy also makes it more meaningful when a temporary narrator is abruptly devoured by bugs because it removes their voice from the rest of the story.Vlessing, Etan (April 26, 2018). [16] Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney’s The Nest is a story of a family of disillusioned Gen Xers struggling to get their lives together in the aftermath of the 9/11 tragedy and the 2008 financial crisis. Told through the experiences of one family of siblings, The Nest is a different look at the American Dream as experienced by today’s generations. Typically, I find flowery writing to be very off-putting, an attempt at poetry that comes off as pretension. The Nest definitely has that vibe, but something about reading horrible, gory deaths written in such an artsy way had me rolling on the floor. It often feels like the author is parodying high-brow literature, so I get the impression that Mr. Douglas knew what he was doing here.

Several weeks later, construction abruptly stops on the stable. Learning that Rory never paid the builders, Allison discovers that his bank account is nearly empty. Rory promises he will have money soon, but Allison is forced to provide for the family by cutting into her hidden cash fund. Allison bristles at Rory's efforts to appear high-class while they remain nearly broke. At work, Rory proposes that Arthur sell his company to a larger American firm looking for a London office. There is a similar predictability in the choice of settings, which constitute a kind of sightseeing tour of New York City: here is Central Park looking lovely in the snow; next the Oyster Bar at Grand Central Station; now let’s take a turn around the Museum of Natural History. The book feels like tourism in another way, too. In being almost tyrannically entertaining, nothing can ever really matter that much. Reading feels like day tripping – living shallow in these lives which, for all their drama, never sharpen out of slightly suffocating cosiness. In this way, the Plumbs’ various money issues can just feel, well, a little cheap. Greenblatt, Leah (17 March 2016). The Nest by Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney: EW review, Entertainment Weekly
