The movie is certainly a psychological horror that will leave you thinking. It follows Dr. Rose Cotter, who starts to experience strange and disturbing incidents after the death of one of her patients. In all the incidents, the victims smile as they commit horrible acts of violence, and Rose realizes that she needs to get to the bottom of the situation before it’s too late. Smile DVD release date Smile is writer/director Parker Finn’s first studio budgeted feature, and he is out of the gate running; with a brilliant viral advertising campaign, a delicious idea, trappings of J-horror, a palpable sense of dread and some genuine scares, and all this before the opening credits – sadly the momentum is not sustained and the trauma angle is side stepped for a more traditional monster, and it runs a tad too long, but that opening is so good it just about gets away with it. Dialogue is clear and tight, sounds perfectly natural and dominated by the frontal array; effects and ambience are taken up by all the surround speakers, so that visuals match the sound, phones ringing off screen for example, cars moving across screen; children playing at a party; there is a real sense of naturalism, despite the supernatural elements of the film. Jump scares are suitably loud, while bass is tremendous, being tight, deep and effective, filling out effects and adding significantly to the score.
