About this deal

Use a stud finder to locate the joists in your ceiling. Turn on the stud finder and hold it flat against your ceiling. Slowly move the stud finder across your ceiling until it beeps or lights up. Mark the location where it beeps with a pencil to mark the edge of the joist. Continue working across your ceiling in the area you want to install your downlight so you know the areas to avoid putting the lights. [1] X Research source It’s also essential that the correct cable is used. In most cases 1mm twin and earth should be fine but if it’s a particularly long circuit, there are many lights or they are particularly powerful then 1.5mm twin and earth will need to be used. The electrician doing the work will know exactly what to use.

To replace a LED bulb, various techniques will be required depending on the variety. Although, the most appropriate methods are fairly self-explanatory without understanding expertise or special tools. The next step is getting the cables run in for the lights. Generally, the electrician doing the work will run a cable from the consumer unit or from an existing source down to the switch that’s being used to control them and then out to each hole. A loop is pulled or pushed through each hole before it’s run on to the next hole. When choosing lighting solutions for your space, you may have come across a variety of selections. There are many types of light sources, and one of them is a recessed LED downlight. BTW, at this point, I'm not sure if I'm going to switch the downlights on using the existing switch for the ceiling rose which I'll still be using for another light. It just depends on whether I can feed another switch cable up the channeling. This fixture type requires you to be a little more careful, as the base and dome might be fitted firmly with tightened springs. Tease a flat-head screwdriver in between the base and the ceiling and pry it enough so that you can easily fit your fingers in to pull it off. LED recessed downlights are an eco-friendly choice since they contain no hazardous elements like tungsten or mercury. It's safe for the environment and healthier to use for your family. Also, it produces less heat, so it won't make your room feel warmer, and even if you accidentally touch the bulb, you won't get burned, unlike with traditional lights. The IP65 downlight is mainly exclusively used for installations in bathrooms as they feature a built-in seal that prevents pretty much any and all water, moisture and dust ingress, even pressurised! Choose a downlight that’s short enough to fit in your ceiling. Downlights usually have a tall cylindrical shape so the bulb recesses into your ceiling. Usually, your ceiling will have 6 inches (15 cm) of space behind it, but it may vary depending on the age of your home. Get a bulb that has LEDs and emits about 35 watts so it’s bright enough for your room. [5] X Research source LED lights offer the same light quality, are 90% more energy efficient than old fashioned bulbs, and will last of 25 years when used 3 hours a day. They are a little more expensive, but well worth the extra cost. For us it is LEDs every time. Should the Downlights be Fire Rated?

If you would like to know more about how lighting circuits are wired up then see our project on wiring lighting circuits here. This lighting fixture often uses LED bulbs as they offer the best lighting solutions, as well as the fact you have the option to dim the lights. However, there are integrated LED downlights which already have built-in bulbs within the fitting. In addition, they can fit into the ceiling with the light fixtures. LED stands for Light Emitting Diodes, which means that they are energy-efficient lighting systems that use far less energy than standard filament bulbs.

At this point you will have the connected downlights hanging from the ceiling. All that remains is insert the light into its place in the ceiling. Any LED products are most likely your best option. So, an LED recessed downlight is better than an incandescent bulb or a fluorescent tube. It can save around 80% of your electrical power (versus an incandescent bulb), and the low-voltage power source linked to this fixture also improves electrical safety. I take it this all falls under the Part P in which case does the certifier need to have access to everything such as under the floorboards? Turn off the power to the area at your circuit breaker. Find the electrical control box in your home, usually located in the basement, utility room, or hallway. Locate the breaker that controls the area of your home where you plan on installing your downlights. Flip the breaker switch to the off position to cut power to that part of your home.
