About this deal

Russell Hobbs Chester Grind & Brew Filter Coffee Machine: Best grind and brew filter coffee machine Environment - There is obviously the waste factor when throwing away a coffee filter rather than just cleaning out a plastic of stainless steel permanent filter. Most paper filters however are biodegradable so you can just throw them onto your compost pile along with the nutritious coffee. Add the coffee to the base of the heatproof jug – 1 tbsp per cup you want to make. This is about 7g, so for an 8 cup cafetière you need 50-60g (depending on how strong you like it). You can weigh this out on digital scales or using a measuring spoon. If you’re not filling the whole cafetière (making 8 cups), use 125ml water per 1 tbsp coffee ground for every cup you want to make. Although filter coffee machines are seen as more simplistic there are many options and features to consider when selecting the ideal fit for your household. Jug type It’s larger than most machines but doesn’t feel bulky. Instead its design allows the water tank to be easily removed for filling, and the filter holder to swing out from the main unit so adding grounds and discarding them afterwards is straightforward. It also has a larger capacity than most – up to 15 cups – and the ability to set the water hardness. The parts are dishwasher-safe for easy cleaning.

The glass can break, but replacements are widely available. The plastic or metal handle and plunger are reusable. Quality can range all the way from bland and stale to award-winning, rich, smooth deliciousness. It’s all in the technique (and having the right tools and beans to begin with). The removable 1.25-litre water tank is a nice addition, so you don’t have to fill the carafe from the tap then decant into the machine, and the descaling light reminds you to banish limescale buildup on a regular basis. There’s also a strength adjuster, AromaSelector, on the top of the machine but we found it to be more effective when brewing smaller amounts of coffee – at its full capacity of 10 large cups (125ml) or 15 small cups (85ml) it made little difference to the flavour. Boil the kettle and leave it to rest for 1 minute while you weigh the coffee. You need the water to cool down slightly, as you don’t want to ‘burn’ the coffee grounds when you pour the water over. It’s a speedy brewer, too, as you’ll only have to wait a mere six minutes for a full, ten-cup jug of coffee. The hot water element turns off automatically once the 1.25L water tank is empty, while the hot plate remains on to keep coffee hot for 40 minutes. What’s most notable about the hot plate, though, is that it preserves the temperature at around 80 to 85°C and doesn’t impact the coffee as markedly as other hot-plates on alternative filter coffee machines. The Moccamaster stands out as a sleek and sensible choice for consistently great coffee without the hassle.

Plunge slowly and steadily, holding the handle with one hand, and the plunger with the other. Don’t plunge too fast or some of the grounds can escape the strainer, or the coffee can spurt out of the spout. Any brew method that uses a paper filter does lend itself to lighter or medium roasted coffees as the paper will reduce the amount of oils that pass through into the cup and result in a clean and bright coffee that can highlight more delicate flavours notes that can be found in light roasted coffee. Clean the cafetière before use – you need to clean it before or after every time you use it. Reusing a cafetière without cleaning will make your coffee taste a little old or muddy. While they look like drip-brew machines, these work by automating the more involved coffee-making process of the manual pour-over drippers. Rather than constantly dripping hot water over the coffee like cheaper machines, pour-over models dispense water more gradually over the coffee grounds. Some deliver water initially to allow the coffee to ‘bloom’ before dispensing the rest. The process takes longer but results in a more flavourful cup. 3. Grind and brew machineTaste - There will be a difference in taste, moreso body of the coffee. A paper filter will stop many of the soluble oils entering the coffee as well as any fine grounds reusulting in a cleaner cup which is great for lighter roasts or more complex coffees. A permanent filter is usually stainless steel or plastic with tiny holes. The end result will be a more full bodied coffee which is great if you’re a fan of rich darker notes in your brew.

To keep your coffee tasting flawless, regular cleaning and descaling is essential. Many of our filter coffee machines have descaling displays and descaling programmes. These alert you when you need to carry out a descale of the machine. By regularly descaling your filter coffee machine you can prolong its life and ensure the perfect tasting brew every time.It doesn’t take up too much space, in fact, it takes up no space on your worktop, you can simply store it in the cupboard until needed, unlike larger electronic coffee machines.
