About this deal

A more mature version of Audio-Technica’s AT-LP120USB, the AT-LP140XP features Technics-like DJ components such as the platter strobe/light, forward/reverse operation, variable pitch control and a retractable light. The 140 is a mature 120. Grown up, rather serious and better built but it retains its DJ aspirations. SOUND QUALITY Our list ranges from beginner-friendly budget options through to pro models suitable for club use, but the bottom line with turntables is that you generally get what you pay for. That’s not to say that cheaper models aren’t very impressive these days, but if you’re able to step up to a mid-range or high-end turntable you’ll see and hear the benefits in terms of build quality and sound. You may also like… As they're built for DJs, if you're simply playing music, you can probably find something of similar sound quality, if not better, at a lower price. As The Audiophile Man writes, DJ accessories can hinder sound quality, because the features "inject a measure of noise into the signal." It boils down to a question of need: "What the hi-fi gods give with one hand, they take away with another." The Reloop RP-8000 MK2 is the obvious choice for DJs who use digital vinyl system (DVS) software such as Serato or Traktor. It’s a clever hybrid turntable which includes controller features designed specifically for software.

As you can see, just based on some of the key features discussed in this section, the Audio-Technica AT-LP120-USB may have been succeeded by the AT-LP120XUSB, but it still has specs that not only can match the AT-LP120XUSB, but in some cases surpass it. Install the dust cover hinges into the slots on the dust cover, but do not install the dust cover onto the turntable at this time. Set aside.

With a starting torque of 2.2 kgf.cm, the AT-LP140XP turntable has the highest torque motor of the three. It is a professional-quality turntable designed for commercial use, but the well-damped chassis and platter make it suitable for home use as well. This motor features a reversible direction and offers three pitch adjustment ranges, +/-8%, +/-16% and +/- 24%. The AT-LP140XPis an admirable lifestyle design, but its not a true audiophile product. This is not a bad thing in broad terms but, if you’re interested in purchasing a AT-LP140XP, you need to understand exactly what you’re buying and why. CONCLUSION There’s not a lot I don’t love about this record player, but I will say that there are some features you might expect to get here that aren’t included. Both the AT-LP120-USB and AT-LP140XP turntables use a detachable AC power cord. AC to DC conversion is done inside the turntable. The AT-LP120XUSB turntable uses an AC adapter that handles AC/DC conversion outside the turntable, reducing noise in the signal chain. As we found in our review of the SL-1210 MK7, the new model lives up to the legacy of its much-loved predecessors. What more is there to say? It’s the definitive DJ turntable for a reason, and it’s still our favourite all-rounder. It’s not the cheapest model on the market and it’s easily beaten when it comes to features by models like the Reloop RP-8000, but it still sets the benchmark for solid build quality, reliability and feel. The 140 arrives with a cover but, if sound quality is a priority, I would recommend removing it before play to eradicate the inherent vibrations you get from it and the hinges. Loosely place the cover over the turntable when you’re not using it. Finally thumbs up to the platter on the 140 which includes a damping material underneath to reduce ringing. That means that whether you’re placing the tonearm and stylus into the record groove to play a record or lifting the tonearm off the record once the final song finishes and returning it to its rest—you will be fully responsible for these tasks. In the end, I do think the Audio-Technica AT-LP140XP is worth the money. I think it provides enough features to satisfy potential buyers, and the one or two features it loses (namely USB functionality and a built-in preamp) are not at all consequential to the playing experience or the sound quality. Now, just pop out the ATN-XP3 stylus and put in a new one. Or, better yet, install the ATN-XP5 stylus or ATN-XP7 stylus for even better quality sound. The S-shaped arm on both the 120 and 140 looks the same and includes an attendant anti-skate wheel, arm lift, secure arm rest clip plus the useful wheel at the base of the arm to change the arm’s height. To avoid the effects of vibrations and acoustic sound pressure, do not position the turntable on top of or near any loudspeakers.

While the AT-LP140XP is seen as a turntable that can be used for everyday home use, it’s really aimed at those that are taking vinyl record playing a bit more seriously, have higher end equipment to pair with this turntable, and are less interested in convenience and more excited about sound quality and playing performance. AT-LP140XP vs AT-LP120-USB The turntable is designed to connect to components that have a dedicated phono input, and it comes with a detachable dual RCA output cable with a robust 5.5 mV output. All models are fully manual in operation. There are NO automatic functions. To start and stop the rotation of the record platter, press the Start/Stop button at any time. To place the stylus (needle) on the record, raise the tonearm from the tonearm rest by raising the cueing lever. Use your hand to move the tonearm over to the desired location on the record then lower the arm to the record by lowering the lever. At the end of play, raise the arm by raising the cueing lever, use your hand to return the tonearm to the tonearm rest and lower the arm to the rest by lowering the lever.
