Ever the trooper, it's Ghost Protocol that arguably cemented the franchise's - and the star's - name with regards to grand stunts, something which the early Bond films used to be celebrated for, but which Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible is now synonymous with. I already owned Mission: Impossible in HDX (1080p) on Vudu but I figured I would try to upgrade MI:1 to Digital 4K (UHD) on iTunes. Unfortunately, the iTunes code does not provide a Digital 4k version, even though Apple supports 4k HDR with Dolby Vision as provided on the disc. [ Update: Upon release date of the 4k Blu-ray the digital code now redeems to Digital 4k with Dolby Vision. Woohoo!] Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation is a terrific example of what a great modern spy movie can be. Against all odds, every single aspect of this film works to near perfection. Rogue Nation is smart, thrilling, funny… and a tremendous amount of fun. This is a straight-up great film. Thankfully, Paramount’s new 4K disc presents it in top A/V quality and adds substance to the extras too, making this an easy-to-recommend upgrade. If you love this genre like we do here at The Bits, absolutely do not miss it. Overall, the video resolution is a huge, night-and-day improvement over the 1080p Blu-ray version which pales in comparison to this new print. There are some shots that could have been clearer, for example Jon Voight in the opening airplane scene isn’t the sharpest image you’ll see, but given the low lighting and mushy focus in the original film there’s not much that can be done to fix certain shots. Furthermore, Hardy's creative cinematography also enjoys another unmistakable upgrade, as colors are observably bolder without also seeming overemphasized or excessive. The Dolby Vision HDR presentation delivers a sumptuous array of primaries, making the cerulean blue skies glow during the many daylight exteriors. There are appreciable differences in the ruby reds of blood, the crimson radiance of lights and the candy rose in some articles of clothing. Meanwhile, the greens of the surrounding foliage are brimming with life and a lovely splendidness. Although a bit more nuanced and subtler, secondary hues and softer pastels receive a welcomed, dazzling boost, showering sunset scenes with a lovely, picturesque assortment of orangey yellows, blushing pinks and deep lavenders. Flesh tones have a more natural, reddish appeal as well as, making this UHD version better than its HD SDR counterpart and the preferred way of watching the movie. Effects make an impact too, with De Palma's attention to aural detail accentuating the nuances, which are given superior and discrete dissemination across the surrounds, levelling with a nice underlay of LFE punch.elevator shaft with the big metal box being maneuvered about on its pulley system.
