Like other edge forming bits, the tips are equipped with a pilot bearing to guide the cutting arms along the outside edge of the material. Also taking a big cut with a 1/4in shank bit needs to be done with care to avoid bending the shank of the bit (see above).
A better base for your purposes is the plunge base, which can be set up to allow repeatable depth cuts. You already have the two perfect tools to make one, the table saw to make the base and fence, then the router to make the insert plate recess and the slots for the locking knobs. What distinguishes these bits from others (like a straight bit used for rabbeting) is the addition of a circular pilot bearing at the bit’s tip that acts like a spinning wheel riding along the edge of the piece being cut, guiding the cutting arm to the perfect depth. V-bits as with most other decorative cutting bits come in a range of different shapes and angles that can be used to form everything from a deep thin channel to a wide shallow one.
As the bearing follows the object your are working on, the size of bearing dictates the depth of the cut, so for a different depth of cut you can simply change the bearing for a different size. The chamfer or bevel cutting bit is commonly used for shaping the edges of objects such as book shelves, work tops and table tops and any other object where a sharp 90° edge needs to be removed. I assume I can use the straight cut bit to make a rabbet, but is there a time when a rabbet bit would be used and a straight cut bit not used? What I would like to do, though, is (realising that I must bite the bullet for building some jig / sled type thing) build myself a crosscut sled so I bought some 18mm plywood last night, and some wood for the runners and some for the fences. The one drawback that straight cut bits tend to have is that they are generally unguided meaning you have to use a guide of some kind to ensure a straight and accurate cut or have a very steady hand! It’s used for decorative purposes on the edges of window seals, stools, and tables, and can also be used to make moldings. One that is the same size as the rabetting bit will have as much mass and probably have about the same cutting attack but a smaller straight bit like a 1/2" will be under more stress in a large cut. What I actually did as a test was to make multiple passes across the table saw blade at a height I thought was right for the extra 6mm or so.Unlike performing any of these tasks using other tools such as planes or saws, a router with the correct bit will give a 100% accurate and clean cut when used correctly. Upcut spiral router bits plunge easily and produce smoother, cleaner cuts than straight router bits. An adjustable fence for this can be made simply using a piece of planed softwood (say 3 x 2 nominal) fixed to the router table at one end (ideally near the corner) with a coach bolt (this passes through the softwood and router table top and forms a pivot), and fixed at the other end by clamping it to the router table top after adjusting it. Tired it on some MDF and it worked ok, but since the cuts will be cherry ply, it may not be a good test.
