About this deal

CFExpress Type B cards are up to twice as fast as CFExpress Type A cards. CFExpress A is limited to a maximum data throughput of 1 Gigabyte per second, while CFExpress Type B cards top out at 2 Gigabytes per second. The A7R V has dual CFexpress type A/SD UHS-II card slots, a useful combination, though CFexpress type B cards are both faster and cheaper. (Image credit: Rod Lawton)

Viewfinder: 0.64-inch type 9,437,184-dot OLED electronic viewfinder, with refresh rate up to 120fps, adjustable magnification up to 0.9x MRW-G2 CFexpress Type A/SD card reader is required for CFexpress Type A card diagnosis. Diagnosis is not possible with readers from other manufacturers or a direct camera connection. An interesting aspect of the CFE specification is the apparent plan by manufacturers to use the specification within the form factor of existing formats. In other words, they will fit and be usable in cameras and devices using XQD cards and perhaps other formats. Big deal, you might be thinking. Why should I be excited about a memory card? Especially when you might have noticed that a CFexpress card seems to cost a bit more than a regular SD memory card.

Maximum video resolution: Uncropped, internal raw recording 8K video at up to 29.97fps in 4:2:2 10-bit in Canon Log (H.265) or 4:2:2 10-bit HDR PQ (H.265), Uncropped internal recording 4K video at up to 119.88fps in 4:2:2 10-bit in Canon Log (H.265) or 4:2:2 10-bit HDR PQ (H.265) 4:2:2 10-bit in Canon Log or 4:2:2 10-bit HDR PQ, 4K output over HDMI at up to 59.94fps Whether you're using type A or B, higher-capacity CFexpress cards appear to perform better. Since these cards are already expensive, we'd recommend investing a little extra for something around 300-500 GB to start for better performance.

The new memory card game in town, it’s fast becoming standard practice for new cameras to come sporting a CFExpress slot. Our sample images show all the resolution and quality we’d expect having used the A7R IV before this. We didn’t have the camera for long enough to test its video features, nor its improved image stabilization. We also look forward to testing the continuous shooting buffer capacity when we get a review sample.
