About this deal

It’s not exactly clear what causes LPDs to develop, but it’s believed lifestyle factors could be a cause. One study found people with a short luteal phase were more likely to be smokers, as it’s thought smoking can reduce the body’s oestrogen and progesterone production. If you’re of the mindset that fewer periods is a good thing (who needs ‘em, right?!) you should still see a doctor if you are getting fewer than 8 or 9 periods a year, as this can negatively affect your long-term health. So could PCOS be what’s causing my painful periods?

Oestrogen takes a nosedive in this part of the cycle and takes vaginal lubrication along with it. Although you might be feeling a little needier and happy to give and receive physical affection, sex is probably not high on your priority list. One study found that when body odours given off by females were collected at various times throughout the cycle, and ranked by a group of single men and men who were part of a couple, the ovulation odours seemed to improve social perception among single men, while impairing social perception among pair-bonded men. What does this mean? Well, if you’re ovulating, you may appear more attractive to single men, but your partner is unlikely to take any notice - sounds about right! Here’s another example of this misinformation at play, but unlike the last ad, this one is blatantly using it as a way to influence the use of sanitary towels instead of ‘internal sanitary protection’. It’s possible there was a little rivalry at play here, between the makers of the Mega Pad Belt (*gulp*) and tampon manufacturers. Today we can see it for its cheesy copy and incorrect information, but many young women likely based their sanitary protection choices on adverts like these. Everybody loves tennis, right?

They explain that there are 4 primary hormones affecting the menstrual cycle; estrogen, progesterone, Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH). During ovulation, the female sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone peak. During the luteal phase (the phase in your cycle after ovulation) both these hormones begin to fall. Then there’s a second smaller peak as progesterone rises, peaks then drops again. The rapid rise and fall of these hormones can affect chemicals called neurotransmitters in our brains, namely: We’ve all heard PMS being dismissed with shallow quips when emotional reactions are judged to be out of place (usually by people who don’t have periods). The mindless comment “are you on your period or something?” is poised to instil rage rather than bestow any gems of insight.

Swimming, running, playing sports, dancing, walking through the… desert, or something? This ad teaches us that there are so many opportunities to wear white from head to toe, and when you do, you DO NOT want to be caught without these tampons. If we had a penny for every time we went horse riding in pure white jodhpurs while on our period and got caught out… blimey! Just...huh? Have you ever slipped a tampon out of its wrapper and noticed a subtle fuzzy halo? Maybe even a few thin, stray wisps here and there? Well, there’s a chance - depending on the kind of tampons you’re using - that these loose fibres may become detached from the tampon and take up residency in your vagina. This is referred to as tampon shedding. Stress: Yes, excessive stress can affect hormones and interrupt your flow, making it lighter or even stop altogether. And the rumours are true; the stress of the pandemic could be to blame, with the National Institute of Mental Health stating that Covid anxiety could bring on stress, changes in eating/sleeping habits, heightened chronic health issues, and more. All of these can affect the speed and intensity of your flow.Have you ever tried eating according to your period? If this has never occurred to you, don’t worry. Mostly people make food choices based on taste and convenience, and it can be tough to plan ahead for meals at the best of times. However, if you can factor in some nutritious foods that support each stage of your cycle, you may find there are some unexpected and welcome benefits. Here’s what you need to know: Why eat according to your menstrual cycle? Brown SA, Jiang B, McElwee-Malloy M, et al. Fluctuations of Hyperglycemia and Insulin Sensitivity Are Linked to Menstrual Cycle Phases in Women With T1D. J Diabetes Sci Technol 2015; 9: 1192–1199. There are different intensities of PCOS, but if you have the condition, your cycle most likely works a little differently to others; each month, a follicle matures and is released by an ovary to be fertilised, but if you have PCOS you may have high levels of androgen hormones (like testosterone) which interfere with ovulation. This hormone imbalance causes the follicle not to develop or release, and instead it just stays put in the ovaries. Tampons that are made with super absorbent, synthetic materials are prone to shedding fibres inside the vaginal canal, creating the perfect breeding ground for bacteria, and therefore increases the risk of getting yeast infections. And surprise, surprise those mainstream, synthetic tampons were the ones I was using. Thyroid conditions: Your thyroid has more influence over your menstrual cycle than you might think, and too much or too little thyroid hormone can sometimes cause periods to become very light or even stop for months at a time.

It replaces the longstanding ‘Live Well for Less’ strapline and is part of the retailer’s commitment to promote healthy food. It says just a quarter of the UK population currently eat the required five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. Plus, many of these fabrics are not breathable, meaning they trap in moisture and odour which increases your risk of bacterial infections in your vagina - your girl gotta breathe! What’s best?It is understood that eating magnesium-rich foods can help fight the fatigue and low libido associated with this time in your cycle. Add foods like spinach and pumpkin seeds to your diet, and *cue the trumpets* dark chocolate! The emotional symptoms of depression and anxiety can be really similar to PMS. It’s thought that around half of women seeking treatment for PMS also have one of these conditions. Depression and anxiety can be around for the entire month - but still, unfortunately, get worse before or during periods. Handling and adapting to your cycles and mood

What will be the key trends in your industry in the next five years and where do you see them heading? This is why it’s important to look for high-quality tampons and to always choose the right absorbency for your flow.
