It is an honest, rational look at the way society has conditioned us to approach sexual assault and sexual assault victims. maude herself is a mysterious figure, because her individual motivations are less important than the toxic rape culture which plagues survivors. Tamblyn wrote that she became financially successful when she turned 21 and starred in Joan of Arcadia after which her father became her co-manager, and her mother her business manager. Tamblyn realizes she has a larger responsibility with her fame and power, to follow speech with action, which is what drove her as a founding member of Time’s Up. But we can't expect guys to read our minds or understand our feelings because they're so different from ours!Additionally, the way it's written is meant to evoke the feeling, at times, of what it is to be a survivor of sexual assault in all its different forms. In a series of September 2017 tweets later reiterated in an open letter published in Teen Vogue, she said that actor James Woods tried to seduce her and a friend at a restaurant and offered to take them to Las Vegas when both Tamblyn and her friend were 16.

While this book does come with a pretty big trigger warning - Maude's crimes are abhorrent and rival those of Josef Fritzl in sheer sociopathy - Tamblyn thankfully avoids describing the assaults in great detail. Tamblyn is able to shed a harsh new light on how real, actual, pervasive sexual offenses are treated (and mistreated) in this country, and the world writ large. There are characters who are just like you and me, and then there are characters who are obviously inspired by real-life figureheads who perpetuate certain aspects of how society is currently functioning. I suffered and so did these characters, and Tamblyn shows the very difficult task of trying to move past the stereotype of being a man who was raped.
