About this deal

The first time I saw Crew Kensington, I was tempted to tell him, You have the prettiest eyes I’ve ever seen. I was fifteen. I didn’t end up saying a word to him, because those eyes are the only attribute of his that could be described as inviting. Because they weren’t—aren’t—his only attractive feature, and that used to intimidate me speechless.

The National Team Up With Obama To Bring "Signs Of Hope & Change" ". Stereogum. 2008-09-03 . Retrieved 2010-01-23. I love a cynical, ice princess; a self-proclaimed bitch; an unfeeling, jaded heroine! But I love them because of the reminder they serve that women are flawed and infallible and that is okay. Stoic and aloof is often used to describe morally gray men but honestly, I know so many women like that too and sometimes I crave a non-sunshiney heroine and that is exactly what you’ll get in Scarlett Ellingsworth. She’s rich, intelligent, hard-working, stunning and powerful and she owns every inch of it. But with that high position comes the need to constantly prove herself and show no emotions, in the chance she gets misconstrued as overly emotional, weak or spoiled. That doesn’t mean she doesn’t have emotions or vulnerabilities or struggles and seeing her bare that softer side with the man she’s in forced proximity with made this such an amazing story! Scarlett was ambitious and didn’t need her family’s money to build her fashion magazine. She reminded me a lot of one of my all-time favorite book characters. Both of them are perceived as cold and have trouble expressing their emotions. All through Crew was great--- a charismatic playball, I think that Scarlett really stole the show. She was a fantastic character, and dare I say maybe a top ten female book character for me. I really enjoyed her slowly opening to Crew and facing her fears. Also, she was much more successful than him. AD: I’ve spoken with several artists who have begun to write purposefully ambiguous lyrics because they know that their songs are going to be interpreted differently by different people; to what extent do you do the same? How do you feel about the way your songs are interpreted? I shake my head in response. He slides into the seat beside me, sitting close enough the stiff material of his pants brush my leg. It’s a deliberate, practiced move, one that should probably prompt more of a response than light chafing. Unfortunately, I’m distracted by the feel of eyes on me, eyes that don’t belong to the guy beside me. I don’t succumb to the strong urge to look at the bar.I loved watching these billionaire nepotism babies running around, worrying about money like they won't still be millionaires even in the worst case scenario. Rich people are so funny.

As soon as I appear, all conversation ceases. Six eyes widen. Three sets of lips purse. A few harsh comments sneak to the tip of my tongue, but I swallow them. You can’t expect anyone to see you as above them if you lower yourself to their level. Insults say more about the speaker than the intended recipient. My stomach dips like the floor fell out beneath me as soon as I hear the deep, confident voice. I focus on everything tangible: the hard surface my arm is resting on, the pinch of my heels, the splash and smell of alcohol being poured. Without looking over, I instantly know who is standing beside me. Canadian single certifications – The National – Fake Empire". Music Canada . Retrieved March 22, 2023. Like the one bed trope? What's the point of having it if NOTHING happens. Do you think I pay to watch them sleep🤨 The two realizations are unnerving, uncomfortable. I don’t like the implications, and I need a distraction.

As I walk across the club, I can feel the stares on me. The gold sequined minidress I’m wearing isn’t meant to blend into the wallpaper. Work has eaten up most of my time lately. The only reason I left the office before eleven p.m. is that it was Andrea’s birthday tonight. None of my magazine’s editorial staff—including her—will leave before I do. Matt Berninger: Neither were every really songs about war. “Fake Empire” has political allusions but it’s also just a song about going out and forgetting your troubles. If anything, its more about trying to avoid thinking about the state of the world.

I raise my martini to him in a silent cheers. Immediately, I second-guess the motion. It feels like toppling the first domino. Moving the first pawn. I don’t play games until I know the rules. When it comes to me and Crew, I’m not even sure if there are boundaries in place.

Lyrically, "Fake Empire" is a commentary about a generation lost to disillusion and apathy. Vocalist Matt Berninger further explained to The Quietus that it is about "where you can't deal with the reality of what's really going on, so let's just pretend that the world's full of bluebirds and ice skating." [3] Promotion [ edit ] They’re jealous—and drunk. But still, I want to lecture them about the hypocrisy. Crew isn’t greedy? Just me? Brilliant song! Here's a thought about the meaning. I wonder if this song is about finding a new love. There's a purity in the feeling of happiness when you initially fall in love, that 'honeymoon period', when you're like children - 'making pies', 'lemonade', 'tiptoe through the city', 'bluebirds', not worrying about what others think about your public displays ('do our gay ballet on ice'). if the lemonade here is intended to suggest the lemonade made in the axiom about life handing you lemons, it's crushing to think that even that most optimistic outlook is so bleak that we might "put a little something in our lemonade" - i.e. liquor it up to numb ourselves, to stay only "half-awake" so we don't have to admit it's a fake empire.
