She is in a new school, in a new town, with a new last name and she still can’t escape the rampant bullying and slut-shaming she has experienced over one photo. i can't even imagine how many girls and women have to go through this and how victims are blamed and shamed whilst the abusers get away with it. The Burning, published in 2019, was nominated for the Carnegie Medal and deals with themes including revenge pornography, slut-shaming and witchcraft. It sucks that when reading the book that I feel all these emotions and to know that these issues are actually a reality. The United Kingdom's international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities.While The Burning mainly focuses on modern-day online abuse and shaming, it does also feature flashbacks to a witch trial in Scotland and while I did enjoy that aspect, I do think it sometimes dragged you out of the story a little bit, especially as the supernatural aspects didn’t fit the tone of the book BUT I do appreciate the attempt at contrasting how women and their bodies were treated and shamed in the past to how it is today. Laura Bates - founder of the Everyday Sexism project and author of Everyday Sexism and Girl Up - also uses subtle supernatural touches to add to the darkness throughout the novel. Trigger Warnings: This book features rape, non-consensual pornography, sex shaming, victim blaming, bullying, discussion of abuse due to abortion, and discussion of death from cancer. It was a scene where Anna and Alisha were talking about love and Anna was extremely shocked when Lish revealed she was in love with a girl. Monans, they’re trying to escape both their grief over Anna’s father’s death and their horror at the severe slut-shaming she experienced at her old school. It's also very British, and I related a lot more to the high school culture here than I do when reading American YA. They drift apart and find new friends, but their friendship keeps asserting itself at parties, shared holiday gatherings and random encounters.I was expecting a book that would be of a girl fighting against sexism, because of Bates' previous books, and while I understand why she wrote this book, and the impact it will have, I wish there was some kind of change. Being a Scot myself, the area of Fife in which this book takes place is one that I am really familiar with and it’s an area of Scotland I haven’t seen represented in fiction before which pleased me immensely. Something that I didn’t like is that it took me so long to understand how the story of Maggie was important and related to Anna’s story. Bates incorporates poetic descriptions ("tongues like blades") while clearly connecting the inhumane treatment of 17th-century women through witch hunts with harmful attitudes held toward today's young women.
