About this deal

Magnesium hydroxide, also known as milk of magnesia, is commonly used as a laxative to treat constipation and in some antacids to treat heartburn ( 2). Magnesium aspartate While the research is inconclusive, some individuals report muscle cramp relief from taking magnesium. Absorption of magnesium from different kinds of magnesium supplements varies. Forms of magnesium that dissolve well in liquid are more completely absorbed in the gut than less soluble forms [ 2, 12]. Small studies have found that magnesium in the aspartate, citrate, lactate, and chloride forms is absorbed more completely and is more bioavailable than magnesium oxide and magnesium sulfate [ 12-16]. One study found that very high doses of zinc from supplements (142 mg/day) can interfere with magnesium absorption and disrupt the magnesium balance in the body [ 17]. Medicines Though more research is needed, magnesium supplements seem to be effective at helping to stabilize blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes ( 16). May reduce heart disease risk

Forms that tend to be absorbed well include magnesium citrate, glycinate, orotate, and carbonate ( 3). Summary ix) Diuretics: for example, furosemide, ethacrynic acid, chlorothiazide, chlorthalidone, metolazone, and indapamide

Magnesium glycinate is bound to the amino acid glycine. Animal and test-tube studies suggest that glycine may have a calming effect on the brain, which is why it’s thought to be beneficial for sleep. Onishi, S., & Yoshino, S. (2006, March 15). Cathartic-induced fatal hypermagnesemia in the elderly. Internal Medicine, 45(4), 207–210 As Mg levels are generally lower in people who have metabolic syndrome [ 59], a diet rich in this essential element may be important in preventing metabolic syndrome. A dietary intervention study ( n = 234) with metabolic syndrome had the Mg intake and insulin resistance estimated by the homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR) four times over one year. The average intake of Mg was 287 ± 93mg/day (mean ± standard deviation) at baseline. The highest quartile of Mg intake had a 71% reduction of developing an elevated HOMA-IR compared to the lowest quartile [ 60]. A prospective study looking at Mg intake and incidence of diabetes, systemic inflammation, and insulin resistance in young American adults followed up for 20 years ( n = 4497) showed a significant inverse relationship with Mg intake and hs-CRP, IL-6, fibrinogen, and HOMA-IR. There was a 47% reduced incidence of diabetes in the highest quartile of Mg intake [ 61]. A meta-analysis study consisting of 15 studies in the Cohorts for Heart and Aging Research in Genomic Epidemiology (CHARGE) ( n = 52,6840) showed that Mg intake was inversely associated with fasting glucose and insulin ( p< 0.0001) [ 62]. A recent meta-analysis of double-blind randomized controlled trials supplementing Mg (12 in diabetics and 6 in those with high risk of diabetes) showed improved glucose parameters in diabetics and improved insulin-sensitivity in pre-diabetics [ 63]. The mineral supplement may be unsafe for people who take certain diuretics, heart medications, or antibiotics ( 1). The Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine in the United States has set a tolerable upper limit of 350 mg per day for supplemental magnesium. Below this level, you are unlikely to experience any digestive side effects ( 1, 25).

Higher bioavailability of magnesium citrate as compared to magnesium oxide shown by evaluation of urinary excretion and serum levels after single-dose administration in a randomized cross-over study. If you’re considering magnesium supplements, make sure you consult your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you routinely use magnesium-containing antacids or laxatives.Insomnia is defined as difficulty either falling or staying asleep that is accompanied by daytime impairments. People with insomnia may turn to supplements like magnesium to help with sleep.
