About this deal

The story revolves around Will Raven, a young medical student, who becomes apprenticed to a renowned obstetrician, and Sarah Fisher, Dr Simpson’s housemaid, a young intelligent woman who would love to study medicine but due to her gender and class cannot. Although taking a dislike to each other, Will and Sarah end up working together when they find out that women have been found dead under suspicious circumstances. Quite Ugly One Morning was the winner of the Critics' First Blood Award for Best First Crime Novel of the Year in 1996. Enjoyable third book in a series set in 19th Edinburgh. Great recurring characters who it is a joy to spend time with again. The writer(s) do excatly what good historical fiction writers should , blending real people and events seamlessly with the fiction.

During this time dangerous medications are dispensed, illegal operations and unscrupulous experiments are carried out on patients deemed to be of little consequence, mainly prostitutes and occasionally a poor servant girl. The goal is fame and enrichment. I also enjoyed the mysteries Sarah and Raven must solve. Both were well embedded in the historical period in which the book is set. Both mysteries were also truly fascinating, I couldn't wait to get the whole thing sorted out. It turned out that I predicted some things correctly. But it did not take away the pleasure of discovering all the smaller secrets and enjoying the twists. A special mention for Gregor, who has become far more than the vicious thug his first appearance would have us believe.Morning Star Online interview". Archived from the original on 3 March 2016 . They didn’t intend on writing a crime at all, but one that looked at Will’s life as an apprentice as well as the professional temptations that are put in his way. Sara que trabaja como sirvienta en casa del Dr. Simpson es una chica inteligente que reniega de su status social, no le gusta su trabajo y no siente esa supuesta gratitud que le dicen que debería sentir por tener un trabajo honesto, ella sueña con poder estudiar, ser tratada como un igual ante los hombres, es una mujer resuelta y fuerte y el tándem que hace con Raven realmente me ha gustado mucho. Meanwhile, Will travels to Leith to assist the difficult delivery of twins and is present when a dead infant is fished out of the nearby river; she has been strangled and cruelly discarded. Eugenie also encourages Will, her beau, to investigate the suspicious death of Sir Ainsley Douglas, a powerful yet corrupt man who had met his end recently. Eugenie hopes that Will can prove that her close acquaintance Gideon, son and heir to his father’s fortune, is innocent of his slaying and time is of the essence as he has already been charged and sentenced to hang for the crime. Elsewhere, Sarah lends a hand to Christina, a maid who is devastated after being forced to give up her baby to a woman who later vanished and has not been heard from since. This leads to the discovery of a baby farm, a place in which unmarried or impoverished girls would pay a fee for those in charge to find their offspring a home in which they could thrive. But it didn't always end up with such a happy ending. Sarah and Will work their cases separately before coming together and merging when they realise that the investigations are connected. The story begins with the suspicious death of Will’s prostitute friend Evie, but her death ( as we are about to find out) is only just the beginning! He dropped to his knees, revealing Sarah behind him. She stood with a poker gripped in both hands, fire in her eyes.

There are plenty of twists and turns in the plot, some rather gruesome descriptions and plenty of atmosphere. Edinburgh was possibly the most important location for medical learning at this time (mid 19th century) and these books make the most of this. Excellent historical thriller. Also, the supposed sexual tension scenes that are thrown in to coincide with the love story don't fare well to me, they just caused a couple of eye rolls.
