The Core Set comes with 33 models in total, all of which require some degree of assembly. The pieces of the models do not require removing from sprues, so no craft knife is required for assembly, although some gamers may like to remove mold lines, and clean respectively. The miniatures game that stole the show at the country’s largest tabletop gaming convention last year is really just a starter set, equivalent to something similar from Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 universe. While Legion has a slightly more complex rule set, it also uses a bit more paperwork and a lot more dice. However, Fantasy Flight hasn’t actually included enough of either the dice or the documentation to really get you started. Part of the fun of the Star Wars Legion franchise is in assembling your army, and this collection does not disappoint. You are given a lot of choice with poses and weapons to create the army you want. We did find this set a lot more fiddly than in previous versions, and it seemed to take longer to put the miniatures together. However, once assembled, we got them sprayed and they looked fantastic ready for their first battle. Many of the franchises’ most quotable lines make it into the game as abilities you can use. Each game of Star Wars Legion will be very different. Included in the Core Set are numerous deployment cards and battle objectives. You will find yourself battling to take key locations, or perhaps to infiltrate your units to the opposing player’s deployment zone.
Star Wars Legion combines the best of card and miniature gaming, and the Shadow Collective Starter Set simply adds to your immersion into the universe. A caveat to this review is that you need to own an existing core set from the Star Wars Legion collection, as this starter set is not a standalone game. Before you can start running across the battlefield and firing your blaster or igniting your lightsaber, you and your opponent will need to define your objectives, deployment zones, and the conditions of the battle. You and your opponent compete to establish the battlefield before your armies ever fire a shot. Legion is a rapidly growing game and at the time that this article is written Atomic Mass Games just announced the next expansions to the game will be based on the battle for Kashyyyk. This expansion will introduce Jedi Master Yoda, and new Wookies units for that can be added to both Republic and Rebel armies, while Separatists will see Magnaguard and a Super Tactical Droid that can be played as a named character or a second generic character. All these units will come with new abilities to the game and grant each faction additional options while forming their strategy. With a growing community of fans and plays, Legion will not be going away anytime soon. In addition to these units, players will also find a complete set of basic command cards, reprints of Darth Vader's three command cards from the Star Wars: Legion Core Set, and three new command cards representing the tactics used by the Imperial forces on Hoth for use exclusively by Blizzard Force. Rounding out this set are 26 reprinted upgrade cards that give aspiring Imperial commanders everything they need to outfit their Battle Force and crush all those that stand in their way. In addition to introducing the Galactic Republic and Separatist Alliance to the game as new factions, this Core Set contains all the cards, tools and tokens you need to begin staging your own Star Wars battles right away, making this the perfect starting point for building your Star Wars: Legion collection. Puzzle Pieces
To begin building your Separatist armies, you’ll find eighteen unpainted, finely detailed B1 Battle Droid miniatures, enough for two corps units. Ready to support them on the battlefield are four Droideka miniatures representing these destructive droids in both their standard and wheel mode forms. Faction-specific, which offer minor bonuses anyone in a given faction can use, but usually only affect specific units. A BARC Speeder miniature gives your Clone Troopers some much-needed speed as they look to out-maneuver the Separatist's battle droids and can be assembled with or without its sidecar. Those who include the sidecar can further customise their speeder with a twin laser gunner, an RPS-6 gunner, or an ion gunner.
