Nobody Walks by Mick Herron | Waterstones
Ah yes, and that I am doing, but unfortunately not enough e-copies at the library, so have ended up in the most recent book (Bad Actors). It’s not in the stellar class of most of the Slough House series, but it’s a very good thriller which fleshes out some familiar characters – most notably Dame Ingrid Tearney and J. This was grittier than the Jackson Lamb books, but it whizzed along and maintained internal coherence throughout. Bettany might have thought he’d left it all behind when he first skipped town, but nobody ever really walks away. It also lays the ground for the events of Joe Country, and at the same time introduces a series villain, ex-CIA operative Frank Harkness. The subject matter allows for some sophisticated satire and some notable current politicians are lampooned pseudonymously. Peter Judd, now home secretary, has plans to use the situation for his own ends, but his Tiger Team have motives of their own which don’t necessarily ally with Judd’s. If you've read the novella The Catch, you'll recognize Herron reusing a device, that of a “retired" agent being put into play by a devious member of Regents Park. Once upon a time, Bettany had gone undercover to put the McGarry Brothers in jail for their contribution to The Troubles.
